Thunder rolls into Southern Oregon Dragway

Southern Oregon Dragway will host the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series Sept. 21-22, 2001. The event is the last of six in NHRA's Northwest Division and will feature more than 350 cars racing in eight categories, including 250-mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars. Racers will be competing for points leading to national and divisional championships and for cash and contingency awards of $138,935, a part of the $6.5 million, 43-race series.

Gates at Southern Oregon Dragway open at 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Qualifying and time trials begin at 8 a.m. Friday with FM Dragsters and FM Funny Cars scheduled to run at

3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday, qualifying continues from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eliminations begin at 2 p.m. and FM Dragsters and FM Funny Cars are scheduled to run their first round of eliminations at 5 p.m.

Tickets, including pit pass, are $15 Friday and $17 Saturday. Children 7-13 are $5 each day. Children 6 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES: Fact Sheet

WHAT: Valley Thunder, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships. Categories include: Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The event is the last of six in Northwest Division competition.

WHERE: Southern Oregon Dragway, Medford, Ore. Track is located in the Jackson County Speed Park. From Medford, take I-5 south to Crater Lake Highway, exit 30. Go east to Hwy 140 and turn right to Kershaw Road. Then turn right to Thunder Road into the track.

WHEN: Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21-22, 2001.

SCHEDULE: Time trials and qualifying schedule for the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:

FRIDAY, Sept. 21 -- Gates open at 6 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

SATURDAY, Sept. 22 -- Gates open at 6 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and eliminations begin at 2 p.m. First round of eliminations for Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car is scheduled at 5 p.m.

PURSE: The NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series competitors will compete for cash and contingency awards of $138,935, part of the 43-race, $6.5 million series.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
FEDERAL-MOGUL POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Federal-Mogul, which will be shared by 2001 Federal-Mogul divisional champions and Federal-Mogul national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven Federal-Mogul national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $167,500 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 43 Federal-Mogul events and the 24 NHRA national events: $1,000 each in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car; $200 each in Competition and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock.

FEATURES: More than 350 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, featuring five-second, 250 mph side-by-side racing.
