Stock, Super Stock mufflers optional for 2002

NHRA announced Sept. 19 that the use of mufflers in the Stock and Super Stock categories at NHRA national and divisional events will continue to be optional. Due to the unique class structure, variety of engine combinations, horsepower factoring system, and number of indexes that would be affected, the decision was made to not move forward with a muffler mandate at this time. Additionally, the overall population of the classes and frequency with which they compete are minimal in comparison to the E.T. bracket categories that compete at weekly events. However, any new classes created for Stock- and Super Stock-style cars will be required to include mufflers.

"The issue of sound and its impact upon communities surrounding NHRA member tracks continues to be a major concern to this sanctioning organization," said Len Imbrogno, NHRA's director of Sportsman racing and member tracks. "One of our primary responsibilities, along with maintaining equal competition, is ensuring the right to race throughout our member track network. NHRA remains committed to sound reduction at its events. However, due to the complexities mentioned, which make up the fabric and flavor of Stock and Super Stock racing, we felt that requiring mufflers at this time would have a negative effect upon equal competition. "

NHRA will continue to do random decibel testing at national and divisional events and will continue to evaluate the possible use of mufflers on an as-needed basis at such events in the future. Therefore, Stock and Super Stock racers are urged to continue working toward the use of mufflers in competition.

NHRA's seven division directors will continue to evaluate member-track noise issues, in all categories, within their respective divisions on a track-by-track basis. In conjunction with each particular member track or group of tracks where noise concerns may exist at weekly and/or regularly scheduled events, NHRA will support and enforce the implementation of muffler rules at the local level to comply with the specific needs of its member tracks.

A provision in the General Regulations section of the 2002 NHRA Rulebook will authorize member tracks, at their option, to impose muffler rules at the local level for weekly activities such as E.T. bracket racing, Street Legal competition, test-and-tune sessions, and the like. NHRA will support these efforts by member tracks to maintain the right to race in their communities and will encourage construction of new tracks throughout the United States and Canada.
