Div. 5 FMDRS rolls into Tri-State Raceway

09/06/01

Tri-State Raceway in Earlville, Iowa, will host a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series presented by Winnebago, Sept. 7-9. The event is the fifth of six in NHRA West Central Division competition and will feature more than 400 cars in eight categories, including 250-mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars. Drivers will earn points leading to divisional and national championships and compete for a share of $148,495 in cash and contingency awards.

Heading into the homestretch, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver David Wells has a commanding lead in points over defending division champion Bruce Bowler. The difference between first and second place is not so wide in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, where Cy Chesterman is leading Kirk Williams by a much narrower margin.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, is leading Bowler in the FM Dragster standings by nearly 200 points. However, Wells can only claim points from two more events while Denver resident Bowler can earn points at five more events. Bowler scored the win at the division's first event of the year at Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas but then Wells won back-to-back races at The Colonel's Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota and at Bandimere Speedway in Denver. He was also runner-up to the South Central division's Jay Meyer at the next divisional race at Nebraska Motorplex in Scribner, Neb.

In FM Funny Car, Sioux City, Iowa, resident Chesterman has three wins to his credit this season, including the season-opener at Heartland Park Topeka and the events at Bandimere Speedway and Nebraska Motorplex. Second place driver, Kirk Williams, from Glenwood, Iowa, has been the runner-up three times, in Brainerd, Denver and Scribner. Both drivers have attended five divisional races and Chesterman leads Williams by 32 points.

FM Dragster and FM Funny Car competitors may count points from the best five out of eight races, including two out-of-division races, toward the championship.

In Super Stock, defending division champion Randall Klein is leading the points. Klein, who hails from Lincoln, Neb., is leading Robert Baldwin by 34 points. Klein is currently the only defending division champion leading the points in any category.

Winners of last year's event were Billy Bybee in FM Dragster, Randy Fleming in FM Funny Car, Jerry Arnold in Competition, Randall Klein in Super Stock, Kevin Helms in Stock, Bob Fuller in Super Comp, Alan Bush in Super Gas and Frank Nichols in Super Street.

Gates at Tri-State Raceway will open at 7 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start at 10 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.
