Comp eliminator rule changes set for 2002

10/23/01

Based on input from Comp eliminator racers and a survey conducted by the NHRA Tech Department regarding current issues within the class, the NHRA Tech Department, in conjunction with the sportsman racing committee, has finalized the following 2002 rules changes for Competition eliminator.

  • Category pairing in Competition eliminator will be based on a sportsman ladder rather than the currently used pro ladder in an effort to give a more equal pairing to all qualified competitors.
  • In an effort to better control the issue of "runaway indexes," permanent index (CIC) adjustments at a given national and/or divisional event will be controlled with a scale that has two plateaus. For example, from .61 through .649 under, the adjustments will continue to increase in .01 increments. However, from .65 to .709 under, the adjustments will be at a fixed plateau of .05. Then, from .71 through .749 under the scale will again increase in .01 increments. From .75 on the maximum cap will be fixed at a plateau of .10.
    Example:
    .61 = -.01
    .62 = -.02
    .63 = -.03
    .64 = -.04
    .65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70= -.05
    .71 = -.06
    .72 = -.07
    .73 = -.08
    .74 = -.09
    .75 on = -.10
  • Permanent index (CIC) adjustments will only occur at national and divisional events and are not affected by the results of national open events.
  • Two new Super Modified category weight breaks (9.50 and 10.50 pounds per cubic inches for dual four-barrel V-8s, 2800-pound minimum weight) will be added between the current E/SM and F/SM weight breaks.
  • The AA/A and BB/A categories will be given the ability to run methanol with the addition of two new indexes for methanol fuel. The AA/AM methanol category will be limited to 450 cubic inch maximum and BB/AM methanol category will be limited to small-block-style engine applications only.
  • Two new truck classes will be added to complement the current A/Truck category with the following weight breaks: B/Truck (8.50 pounds per cubic inch V-8) and C/Truck (9.0 pounds per cubic inch, V-6). All truck classes will have a minimum weight requirement of 2,300 pounds. A/Truck will continue to be based on a 358 cubic inch maximum. All of the truck categories will each have a stick and automatic index.
  • In the Altered classes, the splayed-valve design cylinder heads will be limited to A/A through C/A only.

    Indexes for the new classes as outlined above are currently being examined and will be set by the end of the 2001 season.
