Titles on the line at final Division 2 event

10/10/01

Bristol Dragway will host the final event of the NHRA's Southeast Division Federal-Mogul Drag Series, Oct. 12-13, 2001. More than 350 cars are expected to be racing in eight different categories including Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. Racers will be competing for points leading to divisional and national championships as well as cash and contingency awards of $147,935, part of the $6.5 million, 43-race series.

Claremont, Calif., resident Jay Payne will be looking to clinch his second consecutive division title and third straight division win at Bristol. Overall, he has won two national events and two divisional events this year. Before competing in Funny Car, Payne campaigned a Federal-Mogul Dragster where he has one national championship and four divisional titles to his name.

In Payne's path is Oak Ridge, Tenn., resident Von Smith. The former IHRA standout is second in points to Payne, and has defeated him in three out of four races in Southeast Division competition. Smith started off the year in impressive fashion by winning the first three events in the division. He won at Gainesville Raceway and Orlando Speed World Dragway, both in Florida, and at Montgomery Motorsports Park in Alabama. Only a final-round loss to Payne at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Ga., prevented Smith from taking four straight division wins.

In the Competition Eliminator category, Mike Saye, of Johnston, S.C., will be looking to win his fourth Southeast Division event in a row, and fifth event overall this season.
