Division 3 season wraps up at IRP

Indianapolis Raceway Park will host the last of six NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series events in North Central Division competition Oct. 12-14.

The event, which was originally scheduled for US 131 Dragway in July, will feature more than 500 cars racing in eight categories including 250-mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars. Drivers will earn points leading to divisional and national championships and compete for a share in the $158,180 purse.

Gates at IRP open at 7 a.m. each day and racing begins at 10 a.m. Friday, and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. On Friday, Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars will make one qualifying run at 4 p.m. Saturday, they will make passes at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Eliminations in all classes begin Sunday at 8 a.m. with Dragsters and Funny Cars scheduled to run at 1 p.m.

Tickets, including pit pass, are $10 Friday, $15 Saturday and $15 Sunday. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paid adult.

Winners at last year's US 131 Dragway event were Dave Hirata, Federal-Mogul Dragster; Marc White, Federal-Mogul Funny Car; Jerry Arnold, Competition; David Turner, Super Stock; Larry Hodge, Stock; Doug Kittrel, Super Comp; Brian Folk, Super Gas; and Barney Barnhart, Super Street.

NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES: Fact Sheet

WHAT: NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships. Categories include: Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The event is the last of six in North Central Division competition.

WHERE: Indianapolis Raceway Park, Indianapolis. Track is located on Indiana Highway 136, four miles west of Interstate 465 at exit 16.

WHEN: Friday through Sunday, Oct. 13-14, 2001.

SCHEDULE: Time trials and qualifying schedule for the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:

FRIDAY, October 12 -- Gates open at 7 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 10 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

SATURDAY, October 13 -- Gates open at 7 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

SUNDAY, October 14 -- Gates open at 7 a.m. Eliminations begin at 8 a.m. Eliminations for Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car begin at 1 p.m.

PURSE: The NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series competitors will compete for cash and contingency awards of $158,180, part of the 43-race, $6.5 million series.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
FEDERAL-MOGUL POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Federal-Mogul, which will be shared by 2001 Federal-Mogul divisional champions and Federal-Mogul national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven Federal-Mogul national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $167,500 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 43 Federal-Mogul events and the 24 NHRA national events: $1,000 each in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car; $200 each in Competition and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock.

FEATURES: More than 500 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, featuring five-second, 250 mph side-by-side racing.
