Stock, Super Stock HP, index adjustments released

08/14/01

The following Stock / Super Stock horsepower and index changes, produced by the Automatic Horsepower Factoring System (AHFS), were announced Aug. 14. This is the second "round" of scheduled changes for 2001. All changes take effect on August 27, 2001, just prior to the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. It should be noted that theses changes include ONLY results of the Automatic Horsepower Factoring System. Letters, requests, etc. for horsepower reductions are still being reviewed, and any results will be posted within the next 10 days.

To recap the system basics: Only national event final qualifying data is included in the database. (Only those runs accumulated since the last horsepower change are used for any engine that has received a change.) Any run of 1.15 seconds or more under index, or .25 seconds or less under index, automatically triggers a flag for analysis. Engine combination averages and class averages are then computed and analyzed to determine if any change is warranted. If the engine family or class average is 1.00 second or more under the index, an increase is initiated. If the engine family or class average is .50 seconds or less under the index, a decrease is initiated. The amount of change is calculated on a stepped percentage basis. Where applicable, adjustments will be effective for the specific car model or body style being evaluated.

"We received a pretty positive response to the first round of changes back in May," said Director of Sportsman Racing and Member Tracks Len Imbrogno. "Of course, no one is happy to get horsepower, but with this system, everyone sees where the changes come from."

All changes are effective Monday, August 27, 2001. (stats updated 08/16/01)
