"We need another win to have a shot at the Championship." -- Jay Meyer

Defending NHRA Division 4 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion Jay Meyer increased his win streak to 10 straight rounds with a clutch win during this past weekend's NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at the Nebraska Motorplex in Scribner, Neb. With the win, Meyer moved from sixth to fourth in national points.

Meyer qualified his Tom Conway-tuned blown alcohol dragster third in the eight-car field with a 5.660-second elapsed time at 248.89 mph. In round one, he took out No. 6 qualifier Kent Nuckols with a 5.669 at 244.89 mph to set him up with No. 2 qualifier Bruce Bowler in the semifinals. Last year, Bowler put an end to Meyer's National Championship hopes by defeating him in the semifinals of a divisional race in Noble, Okla., and hoped to do so in a race with close to the same implications.

Both drivers encountered problems, but Bowler's was the worst, as a broken rearend slowed him to an 8.99, while Meyer's problem, a stuck shifter, happened further down track. Meyer coasted to a 6.75 at 141.33 mph.

In the final, Meyer would face another Conway-tuned entry, the "Plain Vanilla" entry of David Wells. Meyer took the jump off the line by virtue of a great .423 reaction time (.400 being perfect), and never looked back, running a 5.722 at 245.63 mph to Well's 5.873 at 236.28 mph for the win.

"We came to a track that's new to us and just did the best we could," said Meyer. "We got here late and missed the first qualifying session. We got here just in time to watch the last session, and from what we saw, we didn't miss much. Everybody either smoked the tires or shook real bad. We calmed it down to try not to smoke the tires, but still did in our first run Saturday. We ended up having the quickest blown car in the last session, though.

"We just left it alone for the first round. Luckily for us, in the second round, Bowler blew up a rearend, and kind of gave us a gift in that race, because when I hit the shifter, it wouldn't shift. It apparently stuck. I hit it again, and got it to go in, but by then it was way too late. We had to run Wells in the final. I had a decent light, and the car ran a .72, so everything turned out pretty well. I can't say enough about my team. Without the boys we wouldn't be where we are today."

With the win, Meyer increased his win/loss record in his last 23 rounds to 22-1. Meyer hopes to carry the momentum into his next race, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at famed Indianapolis Raceway Park, where he is the defending champion.

"Our next race will be Indy," said Meyer. "We'll go up to Indy, see what happens there, then come back to Noble and see what happens there. Noble is really the key again this year, we need another win to have a shot at the Championship."
