LoCicero looking to continue streak at Atlanta Dragway
08/01/01

"The trade off was that if I cleaned parts for him, he'd let me go. Cleaning some greasy parts seemed like a pretty fair trade-off at the time."

Joe LoCicero considers himself to be a lucky man these days. After racing Super Stock part-time for a number of years the Lithonia, Ga., resident has been living out his dream behind the wheel of his 1990 Super Stock Camaro, touring the country and drag racing full-time.
LoCicero was first exposed to the sport of drag racing over 30 years ago when he was growing up in Michigan. "I had a neighbor who was into drag racing. He used to go to Detroit and Milan Dragway to race his '69 Olds 442 and I'd always ask him if I could tag along. The trade off was that if I cleaned parts for him, he'd let me go. Cleaning some greasy parts seemed like a pretty fair trade-off at the time," joked LoCicero.
The neighbor eventually stopped going the track, but that didn't stop LoCicero from finding a new ride to the races; his own '72 Chevelle SS, which he began drag racing on the weekends, before concentrating on running NHRA's Super Gas and Super Comp classes in 1986.
Then, in 1993 LoCicero caught wind of a deal that he couldn't pass up. "I heard through a friend that someone by the name of Garland Parsons had an '87 Camaro fit to run in Super Stock ready to go, but he didn't have a driver. I had my eye on moving up to Super Stock anyway, but was kind of vacillating between staying in Super Comp for a while longer or moving into Super Stock. This was the perfect opportunity to get me on my way," explained LoCicero.
LoCicero has since built a Camaro of his own, which is backed by watchmaker, Wittnauer International. The commitment between the pair has really paid off, netting a handful of national event and divisional wins in LoCicero's 8-year Super Stock career, as well as the 1999 NHRA Southeast Division Super Stock Championship. It was in that year that LoCicero also won the Southeast Division's award for the "Most Improved Driver."
LoCicero's most recent national event win came this past May at the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals held at his home track, Atlanta Raceway. The Lithonia, Ga., driver is looking to win at again at the Commerce, Ga., raceway at the NHRA Southeast Division's latest stop on the Federal-Mogul tour. Atlanta Dragway will host its NHRA Federal-Mogul Series event August 3-5.
