Atlanta Dragway to host NHRA FMDRS event

NHRA's Southeast Division will head to Atlanta Dragway for the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event Aug. 3-5, 2001. The event is the fifth of six in Southeast Division competition and will feature more than 350 drivers in eight racing categories including 260-mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars. Racers will compete for points leading to national and divisional championships and for a share of the $147,935 available in cash and contingency awards.

Gates at Atlanta Dragway open at 10 a.m. Friday with qualifying and time trials set to begin at 1 p.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars are scheduled to qualify at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, gates open at 8 a.m. and qualifying and time trials continue at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars will run eliminations on Saturday starting at 5:30 p.m., with the finals scheduled to run at 10 p.m. Sunday, the gates will open at 9 a.m. and all other classes will begin eliminations at 10 a.m. A Jet Car exhibition is scheduled all three days.

Tickets are $10 Friday, $15 Saturday and $15 Sunday. A three-day pass is $35 and children 5 to 12 are $2 each day. Children under 5 are admitted free with a paid adult.

Categories include: Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The event is the fifth of six in Southeast Division competition.

WHERE: Atlanta Dragway, Commerce, Ga. - The track is located at 500 E. Ridgeway Rd. in Commerce, Ga., about 1 hour northeast of Atlanta, near the intersection of Interstate 85 and Highway 441.

WHEN: Friday through Sunday, Aug. 3-5, 2001.

SCHEDULE: Time trials and qualifying schedule for the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:

FRIDAY, Aug. 3 -- Gates open at 10 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 1 p.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. A Jet Car exhibition is also scheduled.

SATURDAY, Aug. 4 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car will begin eliminations at 5:30 p.m. The semi-finals are scheduled at 8 p.m. and the finals for those two classes will run at 10 p.m. A Jet Car exhibition is also scheduled.

SUNDAY, Aug. 5 -- Gates open at 9 a.m. Eliminations begin at 10 a.m. A Jet Car exhibition is also scheduled.

PURSE: The NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series competitors will compete for cash and contingency awards of $147,935, part of the 43-race, $6.5 million series.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
FEDERAL-MOGUL POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Federal-Mogul, which will be shared by 2001 Federal-Mogul divisional champions and Federal-Mogul national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven Federal-Mogul national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $167,500 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 43 Federal-Mogul events and the 24 NHRA national events: $1,000 each in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car; $200 each in Competition and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock.

FEATURES: More than 350 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, featuring five-second, 250 mph side-by-side racing.
