Summer thunder rolls through Edgewater

Edgewater Sports Park will host Summer Thunder, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, Aug. 3-5, 2001. The event is the fifth of six in North Central Division competition and will feature more than 500 drivers in eight categories competing for points leading to national and divisional championships. Classes that will be in competition are 260 mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars, Competition Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street.

Gates at Edgewater Sports Park open at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday. Qualifying and time trials begin at 11 a.m. Friday and will continue at 10 a.m. Saturday. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars are scheduled for one qualifying pass on Friday, at 5 p.m., and will have two on Saturday, at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Eliminations for all classes begin Sunday at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars will run first round of eliminations at 1 p.m.

Tickets for Summer Thunder are $10 Friday, $25 Saturday and $20 Sunday. A three-day pass is $40 and children, 6-12 are $5 each day. Children 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

The track is located off Interstate 75 at 4819 E. Miami River Road in Cleves. Take Interstate 75 to Cleves-Miamitown exit. Continue through Miamitown, right to SR 128 and U.S. 52. Turn right on East Miami Road to racetrack entrance. For more information call Edgewater Sports Park, (513) 353-4666.

FRIDAY, Aug. 3 -- Gates open at 9 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 11 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 5 p.m.

SATURDAY, Aug. 4 -- Gates open at 9 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

SUNDAY, Aug. 5 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Eliminations for Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car begin at 1 p.m.

PURSE: The NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series competitors will compete for cash and contingency awards of $158,180, part of the 43-race, $6.5 million series.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
FEDERAL-MOGUL POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Federal-Mogul, which will be shared by 2001 Federal-Mogul divisional champions and Federal-Mogul national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven Federal-Mogul national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $167,500 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 43 Federal-Mogul events and the 24 NHRA national events: $1,000 each in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car; $200 each in Competition and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock.

FEATURES: More than 500 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, featuring five-second, 250 mph side-by-side racing.
