Federlin and Harker hit the jackpot

LAS VEGAS - In the final results from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Steve Federlin and Federal-Mogul Funny Car pilot Steve Harker claimed victories this weekend at the NHRA Pacific Division finals.

Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., took on newly crowned Pacific Division champion, Brandon Bernstein of Lake Forrest, Calif., in the final and posted a 5.628-second, 254.38 mph pass to take the win.

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, resident Harker squared off against Steve Gasparrelli of West Covina, Calif., in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car final. Harker ran a 5.836 second run at 247.75 mph in his '99 Avenger to turn on the win light.

Others claiming victories at the Pacific division finals were Jeff Taylor of Lumberton, N.C., in Comp; Jeffrey Miller of Pearland, Texas, in Super Stock; Gary Emmons of Pasadena, Texas, in Stock; Mike Ferderer of Buckley, Wash., in Super Comp; Craig Anderson of Waxahatchie, Texas, in Super Gas; Kurt Gross of Oregon City, Ore., in Super Street; Pat Jones of Norco, Calif., in Super Eliminator; and Jerry Stinson of Medford, Ore., in Motorcycle.

Jim Hughes from Phoenix, Ariz., and his '01 Corvette took Best Appearing Car honors. The Best Engineered Car award was taken home by Tom Huggins from Santa Paula, Calif., for his '01 Grand Am. Finally, Pete Cerda and his team from Sacramento, Calif., earned the Best Appearing Crew award.

The Pacific Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series makes it next stop at Firebird Int'l Raceway in Phoenix, Ariz., March 2002.

Racers eye the prize at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

LAS VEGAS - In the final rounds of qualifying at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway featuring more than 875 competitors, Federal-Mogul Dragster pilot Duane Shields and Federal-Mogul Funny Car veteran Marc White took home the Sealed Power Low Qualifier honors in their respective fields.

Shields, of Las Vegas, Nev., made the quarter-mile run in 5.429 seconds at 262.49 mph to put him in the number one position. Shields' Short Line Express-sponsored dragster raced past the other 19 competitors with his outstanding run.

Said Shields, "We're really pleased with the way the car ran. We hope the car performs the same in the first round."

Meanwhile, Glendale Heights, Ill., resident White made a 5.726-second 249.39-mph pass in his '01 Firebird to put him at the top of his category. White's run vaulted him past Claremont, Calif., resident, Jay Payne. Payne ran a 5.732-second pass at more than 249 mph in his Valvoline-sponsored '01 Camaro to secure the number two spot.

Top qualifiers in other classes are Dennis Radford of Baker, Ore, in Comp; Jeff Taylor of Lumberton, N.C., in Super Stock; and Neil Smedley of Phoenix, Ariz., in Stock. The five competitors will share the $2,500 Sealed Power Low Qualifier bonus.

Eliminations begin Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Gates at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway open at 7:00 a.m. Second round of eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car is scheduled for noon. For more information call the track, (702) 632-8231.

Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series rolls into The Strip

LAS VEGAS - In the first rounds of qualifying at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Duane Shields in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Jay Payne in Federal-Mogul Funny Car are leading their respective fields.

Dragster pilot Shields of Las Vegas, Nevada, made a crowd-pleasing 5.489-second, 260.46 mph run to put him atop of the leader board. Meanwhile, Claremont, Calif., resident Payne took the top spot in Federal-Mogul Funny Car with a 5.790-second, 246.80 mph pass in his '01 Camaro.

Top qualifiers in other classes are Dennis Radford of Baker, Ore, in Comp; Jeff Taylor of Lumberton, N.C., in Super Stock; and Bruce Noland of Leesburg, Va., in Stock.

Qualifying and time trials will continue at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday at 8 a.m. Gates open at 7:00 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car final qualifying session is scheduled at noon, with first round of elimination's at 4 p.m.
