Shields and McGlone take home big wins at Woodburn
WOODBURN, Ore. - In the final results from Woodburn Dragstrip, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Duane Shields and Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Dan McGlone took home the honors at this weekend's Les Schwab Challenge.

Shields of Las Vegas, Nev., took on four-time national champion Rick Santos of Brentwood, Calif., in the final and laid down a 5.529-second, 256.41 mph pass to take the win on a holeshot as Santos ran a quicker 5.491 at 257.87.
Shields also took home both ends of the track record in the dragster category, recording a 5.417-second pass at 261.32 in his semifinal match up against Brian Hough.
Oregon City, Ore., resident Dan McGlone was to face off against Larry Miner in the final round of funny car but wound up with a bye run as Miner blew a motor in his semifinal round win and was unable to make the call. The hometown favorite recorded a 5.973-second run at 235.91 mph in his final round bye after taking out Northwest hitter Pat Austin in round one and John Hyland in his semifinal match-up.
"This is a real big win for us," expressed McGlone. "It marks the fifth straight final we've been to (combining NHRA Federal-Mogul Series events and match races) and our first win here at Woodburn. We've recently brought on NAPA Auto Parts as a sponsor who will also be with us for the upcoming nationals in Seattle so the win definitely helps."
Winners in other categories are Jeff Lane of Northbend, Wash., in Comp; Jimmy DeFrank of Tarzana, Calif., in Super Stock; Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., in Stock; Ty Anderson of Vancouver, Wash., in Super Comp; Jim Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz., in Super Gas; Bob Sims of Puyallup, Wash., in Super Street; Tom Elliott of Mt. Home, Idaho, in Top Comp; Jerry Stinson of Medford, Ore., in Pro Sportsman Motorcycle and Mike Nicholson of Vancouver, Wash., in Super Pro.
The NHRA Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series makes its next stop at Renegade Raceway in Yakima, Wash, August 24-26.

Santos, Hentges, and Bernstein do battle at Woodburn
WOODBURN, Ore. - In the final rounds of qualifying at Woodburn Dragstrip, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Rick Santos and Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Pat Austin took the top qualifier honors. Santos of Brentwood, Calif., made the quarter-mile run in 5.441 seconds at 258.02 mph to put him in the pole position. The run also gave Santos both ends of the track record, taking the elapsed time record away from Brandon Bernstein, who set the record in Friday's qualifying.
This weekend's Les Schwab Tires Challenge could be a pivotal point in the season as Santos and Bernstein trail national points leader Mark Hentges by 38 points and 67 points, respectively, for the national championship. Hentges of Federal Way, Wash., qualified number five with a best lap of 5.570 seconds at 254.88 mph. Hentges will square off against Bernstein in round one of eliminations.
Tacoma, Wash., resident Austin made a 5.845-second 244.43 mph pass to put him at the top of his category. Austin and his uncle, Bucky Austin, traded the number one spot back and forth with Bucky landing in the number two spot with a 5.852 seconds at 242.32 mph. The two Austins have 14 championships between them at Woodburn.
Top qualifiers in others classes are Brian Hyerstay of Eugene, Ore., in Comp; Frank Grossi of Upland, Calif., in Super Stock; and Sean Cour of Brush Prairie, Wash., in Stock.
The five competitors will share the $2,500 Sealed Power Low Qualifier bonus.
Eliminations begin Sunday at 9 a.m. Gates at Woodburn Dragstrip open at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars run at noon. For more information call the track, (503) 982-4461.

Bernstein, Austin grab early leads for the Les Schwab Tries Challenge
WOODBURN, Ore. - In the first rounds of qualifying at Woodburn Dragstrip, Brandon Bernstein in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Pat Austin in Federal-Mogul Funny Car are leading the fields.
Dragster pilot Bernstein, of Lake Forest, Calif., made a 5.512-second, 254.81-mph run to set a new track record in his first pass ever down the Woodburn quarter-mile. Bernstein bettered the old mark by just six thousandths of a second. Brian Hough of Eugene, Ore. set the old mark of 5.518 seconds earlier this year.
Tacoma, Wash., resident Austin took the top spot in Funny Car with a 5.903-second, 242.19-mph pass. Austin is the defending event champion and is followed by John Hyland and his uncle, Bucky Austin, in the second and third qualifying positions, respectively.
Top qualifiers in other classes are Brian Hyerstay of Eugene, Ore., in Comp; Frank Grossi of Upland, Calif., in Super Stock; and Calvin Queahpama of Portland, Ore., in Stock.
Qualifying continues Saturday at 9 a.m. Gates at Woodburn Dragstrip open at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster run at noon and 4 p.m. while the Funny Cars make their final qualifying runs at 1 and 5 p.m. For more information call the track, (503) 982-4461.
