It's an all-Austin final at Mission Raceway Park

MISSION, B.C. - The final round of Federal-Mogul Funny Car action at the Lordco Auto Parts B.C. Nationals, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, saw Bucky Austin and his nephew, Pat Austin, fighting it out just as they did at this event a year ago.

This year, it was Bucky, of Fife, Wash., who emerged victorious. He held on to his No. 1 qualifying position and edged out No. 2 qualifier Pat, of Tacoma, Wash. Bucky made a 5.807-second, 248.35-mph run to Pat's 6.126-second, 187.57-mph effort.

In Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal Way, Wash., resident, Mark Hentges, bested Rick Santos of Brentwood, Calif., in a side-by-side nail biter. Hentges and Santos qualified in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively, and in the end, Hentges ran 5.414 seconds at 261.55 mph to Santos' 5.426-second pass at 262.31 mph.

Winners in other classes were Jeff Lane of North Bend, Wash., in Comp Eliminator; Bill Stewart of Marrysville, Wash., in Super Stock; Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., in Stock; Marc Heritage of Spanaway, Wash., in Super Comp; Justin Jones of Spokane, Wash., in Super Gas; Jason Heard of Ridgefield, Wash., in Super Street; Mark Barnhart of Emmett, Idaho in Top Comp; Jerry Stinson of Medford, Ore., in Sportsman Motorcycle; and Jim Behnke of Port Coquitlam, B.C., in Super Pro.

NHRA Drag Racing thunder rolls through Mission Raceway Park

MISSION, B.C. - Cool, breezy conditions made for great competition at the Lorco Auto Parts B.C. Nationals, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, at Mission Raceway Park. After yesterday's action was cut short by rain, racers and fans came out ready for their match-ups.

Both ends of the track record in Federal-Mogul Dragster were set and reset over the course of the day. In the first qualifying session, Rick Santos of Brentwood, Calif., reset the speed and elapsed time mark with a 5.402-second, 264.31 mph pass. Then, a couple of pairs later, Federal Way Wash., resident Mark Hentges took the e.t. record from Santos with a 5.383-second pass. In the second round of qualifying, Brandon Bernstein of Lake Forest, Calif., went 266.27 mph, taking the speed record away from Santos.

In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, there was a family feud between Fife, Wash., resident Bucky Austin and Pat Austin of Tacoma, Wash. They qualified No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, running against each other in both sessions. Bucky's 5.763-second, 249.51-mph effort bettered Pat's 5.775-second, 253.23 mph pass.

Drivers in other categories who will share in the $2,500 Sealed Power Low Qualifier Bonus are Brian Hyerstay of Eugene, Ore., in Comp Eliminator; Harry Holton of Modesto, Calif., in Super Stock; and Randy Hutchings of Calgary, Alb., in Stock.

Eliminations begin Sunday at 8 a.m. at Mission Raceway Park. Gates open at 7 a.m. and tickets are $20 for adults. A pit pass is $5 and children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. For more information call Mission Raceway Park, (604) 826-6315.

Rain halts action at Mission Raceway Park

MISSION, B.C. - Rain dampened activity today in the first rounds of qualifying for the Lordco Auto Parts B.C. Nationals, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. After early qualifying sessions for Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock, the weather moved in causing officials to call the day's events.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the weather is going to allow us to get anything more done today," said NHRA Northwest Division Director Chris Blair. "But the outlook for the rest of the weekend is real promising."

Adam Bowdish of Lake Oswego, Ore., was the low qualifier in Comp Eliminator after one round, and Harry Holton of Modesto, Calif., was in the No. 1 spot after two qualifying runs in Super Stock. In Stock, Randy Hutchings of Calgary, Alb., was the best qualifier after two rounds.

Qualifying for Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car was cancelled today but both classes will get two runs Saturday at noon and 4 p.m. Qualifying and time trials for all other classes resume at 8 a.m. Gates at Mission Raceway Park open at 7 a.m. Saturday. Spectator tickets are $20 and a pit pass is $5. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. For more information call the track, (604) 826-6315.
