Wells, Chesterman roar to victory

DENVER - The Conoco Thunder on the Mountain round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series at Bandimere Speedway came to an end today under cloudy skies. In the end, Federal-Mogul Dragster pilot David Wells and Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Cy Chesterman scored wins. In the final round, Wells, of LeMars, Iowa, took out No. 1 qualifier Mike Strasburg of Lindon, Utah. Wells made a 5.782-second, 247.25-mph pass to Strasburg's 5.821-second, 247.02 mph run.

Chesterman, of Sioux City, Iowa, scored the win with his 6.068-second, 235.31-mph run over Glenwood, Iowa, resident Williams, whose 6.117-second, 233.03-mph effort fell just short. To get to the final round, Williams took out No. 1 qualifier Jay Payne in the semi-finals. Although Payne was the quicker and faster of the two, Williams left him at the light.

"We were just glad we didn't beat ourselves," said Chesterman after his victory. "We never really got a handle on the track this weekend, but we were able to hang on for the win and that's what counts."

Joining Wells and Chesterman in the winner's circle were Tom Snyder, Longmont, Colo., in Comp Eliminator; Steve Berlau, Englewood, Colo., in Super Stock; Rick Wessels, Belle Fourche, S.D., in Stock; Ron Williams, Westminster, Colo., in Super Comp; Dave Slatten, Ft. Collins, Colo., in Super Gas; Max Tafoya, Albquerque, N.M., in Super Street; and Dave Shell, Dillon, Colo., in Super Bike.

Fields set for Sunday eliminations in Conoco Thunder On The Mountain

DENVER - In the final rounds of qualifying in the Conoco Thunder on the Mountain at Bandimere Speedway, Mike Strasburg, in Federal-Mogul Dragster, and Jay Payne, in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, maintained their low qualifier status through two more rounds of qualifying. Strasburg, of Lindon, Utah, improved on yesterday's pass with a 5.700-second pass at 250.37 mph. Upland, Calif., resident Payne improved as well making a 5.952-second, 239.57 mph pass.

Low qualifiers in all other classes are Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., in Comp Eliminator; Frank Weaver, Waco, Texas, in Super Stock; and Marty Woffard, Gore, Okla., in Stock.

Eliminations in the Conoco Thunder on the Mountain begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Gates at Bandimere Speedway open at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars will run first round of eliminations at noon. Drag racing thunder rolls across Bandimere Speedway

DENVER - In the first rounds of qualifying at Bandimere Speedway's Conoco Thunder on the Mountain, a round of the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Mike Strasburg and Federal-Mogul Funny Car pilot Jay Payne took the no. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.

Strasburg, of Lindon, Utah, outran the field with a pass of 5.707 seconds at 250.37 mph. And Upland, Calif., resident Payne made a 5.964-second, 237.75 mph run to take the pole.

Low qualifiers in other classes are Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., in Comp Eliminator; Ron Taylor, Lincoln, Neb., Super Stock; and Marty Woffard, Gore, Okla., in Stock.

Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday at Bandimere Speedway. Gates open at 8:30 a.m. and racing beings at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars will get two qualifying passes; one at 3 p.m. and one at 6 p.m.
