Payne, Wells score big wins at CBIR

BRAINERD, Minn. - Jay Payne picked up his fourth win of the season in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at this weekend's Colonel's Truck Accessories Challenge at CBIR. Payne took the number one qualifying spot, his fifth in a row, and marched his way through the field, running 5.80s most of the weekend.

Payne clocked in at 5.891 seconds at 245.85 mph in the final round against Kirk Williams who covered the quarter-mile in 6.008 at 240.85. Williams left on Payne at the start but could not hold off the California driver.

"We're just real happy," expressed Payne during winner's circle photos. "I have to give the crew a big thanks. They've worked so hard and have done an incredible job. I saw Kirk out in front of me, but knew we had the power and was glad to get the win."

David Wells joined Payne in the winner's bracket as he took out Duane Shields in the final of Federal-Mogul Dragster. Wells, the defending event champion and two-time NHRA West Central Division Champion, used a 5.648-second lap at 253.93 mph to hold off Shields' 5.749, 247.02.

Wells, who qualified third, knocked off reigning division champion Bruce Bowler in the semi finals for the right to face Shields in the finals.

It was father and son in the Super Stock final with Michael Mans defeating his father. Randy. with a run of 10.624 seconds at 123.61 mph. Randy broke out with a 10.386 on a 10.42 dial in at 128.92 mph.

Shields bumps Bowler, Payne stays on top

BRAINERD, Minn. - Duane Shields used his final qualifying pass to vault him to the top of the Federal-Mogul Dragster class and knock off the West Central Division Champion Bruce Bowler. The Las Vegas resident recorded a 5.526 second pass at 258.73 mph to take the number one qualifying position and pushing Bowler to the number two spot with a pass of 5.573 at 256.09 mph.

"It's a beautiful day for racing," voiced Shields. "The track's real nice, it always is here at Brainerd. It got a little warmer than we normally like it, but the car ran great and we should be in good shape for tomorrow's eliminations."

Jay Payne held off a charging Cy Chesterman for the top spot in Federal-Mogul Funny Car for this weekend's Colonel's Truck Accessories Challenge. Payne drove his Valvoline Camaro to a 5.802 second lap at 241.79 mph. Chesterman, of Sioux City, Iowa, clocked in at 5.864, 238.93 for the number two position and is followed by Kirk Williams with a run of 5.915 at 245.83 mph.

"We're running real well right now," said Payne. "We came to Brainerd on the way home from last week's national event in Chicago figuring it would give us a good chance to test our combination for the nationals here at the end of August. With the way the cars running, I'm glad we came. Maybe we can come away from here with a win."

Payne will square off with local racer Gage Chaffee of Big Lake, Minn., in round one of eliminations. Chaffee grabbed the final qualifying position with a best pass of 6.423 seconds at 215.57 mph. Gates open at 7 a.m. on Sunday with eliminations scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. for the second of six events in the NHRA West Central Division. Round one for Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny cars are set for noon.

Bowler, Payne on top at CBIR

BRAINERD, Minn. - Defending NHRA West Central Division Federal-Mogul Dragster Champion Bruce Bowler took the early lead in qualifying at the Colonel's Truck Accessories Challenge at Brainerd International Raceway. Bowler covered the quarter-mile in 5.615 seconds at 247.21 mph to grab the number one spot in the first of three qualifying sessions.

Bowler, of Denver, Colo., is followed by Jeff Hamelink in the number two spot with a pass of 5.669, 248.59, while Duane Shields currently sits in the third position with a run of 5.726 at 252.92.

Jay Payne over took Cy Chesterman for the top spot in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category with a 5.879 second run at 234.49 mph. Chesterman had the number one spot with a 5.887 seconds at 246.10 mph prior to Payne's final pass of the round. Payne is looking for his forth win of the year to go along with national event wins in Topeka, Kan., and Gainesville, Fla. Payne also won earlier this year at the NHRA Southeast Division event in Reynolds, Ga.

Local favorite Gage Chaffee of Big Lake, Minn., qualified his '96 Oldsmobile Funny Car in the number five spot at 6.423 seconds at 215.57 mph.

Gates open at 7 a.m. on Saturday with final qualifying scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. for the second of six events in the NHRA West Central Division. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny cars are scheduled to make final qualifying runs at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday.
