Wells, Chesterman land victories in Brainerd

BRAINERD, Minn.- David Wells of Lemars, Iowa, tookhis first win of the season in Federal-Mogul Dragster, and Cy Chesterman of Sioux City, Iowa, took the top spot in Federal-Mogul Funny Car.

Wells posted a final pass of 5.642 seconds at 251.14 mph as Mark Kinser of Grimes, Iowa, red lit, handing Wells the victory at the starting line.

"So far this season we've been struggling, we played with the clutch set up all weekend and still didn't get it right," said Wells. "We shook the tires so bad I didn't see the win light until half way down the track."

Chesterman was caught sleeping at the tree but, after a better reaction time, Glenwood, Iowa's Kirk Williams lost traction off the pad and swerved towards the wall, forcing him to lift. Chesterman also shook the tires off the line and never appeared to have the car at full power the entire run.

"It was trouble from the word go," said Chesterman. "We shook the tires off the line and when I pedaled it, the blower belt shredded itself. We're just lucky to be the first to cross the line today"

Saturday Qualifying:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bybee, Chesterman rise to the top in Brainerd

BRAINERD, Minn. - In the final rounds of qualifying, Billy Bybee of McLean, Texas, took the number one qualifying spot away from Bruce Bowler of Denver, Colo in Federal-Mogul Dragster. On his final qualifying attempt of the day, Bybee posted a time of 5.581 seconds at 257.25 mph edging Bowlers time of 5.586 seconds at 239.32 mph taking home the Winston Top Qualifier award of $1,000.

"We shook the tires real bad at about the two hundred foot mark and the car pushed towards the wall," said Bybee. "I had to short-shift high gear, but the car hooked up real well for the top end. We usually don't do real well here, but at least for today, things went real well."

In Federal-Mogul Funny Car competition, Cy Chesterman of Sioux City, Iowa also came out strong on the final round of qualifying posting a time of 5.796 seconds at 252.86 mph. Chesterman took advantage of the windy conditions earning him the $1,000 Winston Top Qualifier Award, topping Kirk Williams of Glenwood, Iowa by 0.110 seconds. Williams best effort clocked in at 5.906 seconds at 246.02 mph.

"We've been battling with tire shake all weekend by changing gears and playing with the clutch trying to deal with the heat," said Chesterman. "On that last pass we shook the tires at the one hundred foot mark, pedaled it, and the car hooked up. We've got more to work with but we're chasing the weather conditions at this point."

Eliminations in all categories begin at 9 a.m. Sunday with gates to The Colonel's Brainerd International Raceway opening at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars are scheduled to run at noon.

Friday Qualifying:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bowler, Williams take the early lead in Brainerd
BRAINERD, Minn. - Bruce Bowler of Denver, Colo., set the pace in the Federal-Mogul Dragster category with a time of 5.727 seconds at 234.47 mph, while Kirk Williams of Glenwood, Iowa was quickest in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at 6.028 seconds at 240.53 mph. Bowlers' pass had him creeping precariously close to the wall while keeping the throttle wide open. As Bowler neared the one-thousand foot mark, a quick flame burst followed by a small plume of white smoke came from Bowler's engine, as the dragster nosed over just before the quarter-mile mark.

"We had a fair amount of shake at about the one-hundred foot mark and it pulled to the right a little," said Bowler. "We were a little hot off the line in Dallas a couple of weeks ago, so we made some changes for this weekend and loosened the set up. Unfortunately, we torched a head on that pass but we're happy with our pass today."

Kirk Williams pass had him shaking the tires up to the three-hundred foot mark and appeared to pedal it, making the smoothest pass of the day filled with tire shake in both categories.

"We had a smooth launch then ran into some tire shake at about the three-hundred foot mark," said Williams. "I pedaled it once and the car came right back and gave us a smooth second half pass. I'm just glad that we set the car soft at the last minute or else we wouldn't be where we are right now."

Qualifying resumes in all categories on Saturday. Gates to The Colonel's Brainerd International Raceway open at 8 a.m. and competition begins at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Cars are scheduled to run at 1 & 4 p.m.
