Cheeseman takes his fourth title at Quaker City Raceway

SALEM, Ohio - Chuck Cheeseman of Galena, Ohio took his fourth career event at Quaker City Raceway this weekend in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, while Jeff Wilson of Winfield, Mo., took the top spot in Federal-Mogul Dragster.

Cheeseman make it look easy today with his bye runs in the semifinals and finals matching his track speed record in his finals run at 5.774 seconds at 251.44 mph.

"We were hoping to run a little quicker than a 5.774 this weekend but when things are going your way, they're going your way," said an elated Cheeseman. "We're going out tonight and buying some lottery tickets with the luck we had here today."

Jeff Wilson saved his best for last today in the finals against Gary Ward of Cincinnati, Ohio. Wilson's reaction time was the deciding factor in clearly the closest side-by-side race of the day taking the event by .038 of a second. Wilson posted a time of 5.709 seconds at 250.04 mph to Ward's 5.703 seconds at 244.60 mph. Wilson's reaction time of 0.451 to Ward's 0.495 ends a weekend where the two ran times close to one another all weekend long.

"We had Mel de-tuning the engine all weekend long," said Wilson. "We were taking clutch out of her (the car) as well as dumping more fuel in her trying to remain consistent and it paid off."

The third of six North Central Division races will be at U.S 131 Dragway in Martin, Mich. next weekend, July 21-22, 2000.

Cheeseman slices up the competition with track records

SALEM, OHIO - With over four hours of delays due to passing thunderstorms and other occurrences, Chuck Cheeseman of Galena, Ohio, drove away with track elapsed time and speed records in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category.

Cheeseman, in his only pass of the weekend, reset the track records before approximately 2500 screaming spectators with a pass of 5.744 seconds at 251.54 mph. Marc White of Glendale Heights, Ill., posted an equally impressive time of 5.775 seconds at 248.66 mph. Cheeseman, who won the event last year and is eyeing his fourth win here at Quaker City Raceway, also takes home the Winston Top Qualifier award of $1,000.

"We're really happy with that pass," said Cheeseman. "We didn't think we were going that fast, but thankfully we didn't hurt anything. The conditions were great and we had plenty of time to set the car up with all the delays, we'll certainly take it."

In Federal-Mogul Dragster competition, Jeff Wilson of Winfield, Mo., took the top spot as well as the Winston Top Qualifier award of $1,000 with his final pass of the day clocked at 5.714 seconds at 248.66 mph. Gary Ward of Cincinnati, Ohio, took the second spot with a time of 5.755 seconds at 245.94 mph.

"We shook the tires pretty hard off the line," said Wilson. "We shook 'em up to the 200 foot mark before I short-shifted high gear, then shook the tires again for a second before hooking up." "We're going to play with the set up a little and see if we can remain consistent for tomorrow."

Eliminations begin tomorrow promptly at 8 a.m. with gates to Quaker City Raceway opening at 7 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars are scheduled to run at 1 p.m.

Thunderstorms take center stage at Quaker City
SALEM, Ohio - Mother Nature handed down severe thunderstorms that ended qualifying attempts today at the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Quaker City Raceway. With severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings sweeping down from the Detroit, Mich., area, qualifying came to an abrupt halt at approx. 1:47 p.m. EST. With the weather picture not looking favorable for qualifying to continue today, the remainder of qualifications were cancelled at approximately 4 p.m. EST.

With the Stock class being the only class to complete a qualifying round today, Joe Russell of East Sparta, Ohio was the top qualifier for today with a pass of 11.895 seconds, 1.135 seconds under his index time of 13.03 seconds. Super Stock was the only other class to run today with the rain coming mid-way through the session leaving 43 competitors without a pass.

Qualifying will resume in all categories Saturday at 9 a.m. with gates to Quaker City Raceway opening at 8 a.m.
