A Drive At The Park For White And Wilson

CLEVES, OHIO-The Fourth event of the 2000 North Central Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series took place over the weekend at the Edgewater Sports Park located on the outskirts of Cincinnati. More than 620 drivers and grandstands full of passionate race fans endured the wrath of Mother Nature as weather dominated the final day of drag racing. Following numerous rain delays, racing long enough to crown champions in each of the race categories.

After his second place finish at Martin, Mich., Jeff Wilson of Winfield, Mo., regained his winning ways by out-dueling a very strong Federal-Mogul Dragster field here at Edgewater Sports Park. Wilson ran a 5.870 in the final, narrowly beating Montose, Mich., resident Shawn Bowen's time of 5.981 seconds. "Anytime you can come away with a victory competing against these guys, it's special." said Wilson. "It was not a pretty win by any means, but a win is a win no matter how you slice it."

After regaining the top qualifying position from last years defending race champion, Danny Townsend, Chuck Cheeseman of Galena, Ohio, made it to the final, only to come up a short against Marc White. White, of Glendale Heights, Ill., increased his divisional points lead with a fantastic run in the finals. White had a time of 5.979 at 243.44 mph compared to Cheeseman's run of 5.936 at 240.70 mph. With four divisional races completed, White and Cheeseman are tied at two-a-piece heading into the next race at Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Also in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, racer and veteran driver, Bob Gottschalk, 57, of Toledo, Ohio crashed into the guardrail during the second round of eliminations. Gottschalk was stabilized by local EMT's on site, and then airlifted to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluations on his injuries.

The $2500 Winston Top Qualifier money was shared by Dave Hirata, Federal-Mogul Dragster; Chuck Cheeseman, Federal-Mogul Funny Car; Jerry Arnold, Competition; Jerry Silveus, Super Stock; and Don Holmes, Stock. The Best Appearing Car Award went to Mount Washington, Ky.; resident Matt Alvey while Mike Lawrence of Cincinnati, Ohio landed the Best Engineered Car Award. Finally, Wayne Hutton's team of Portland, Tennessee won the Best Appearing Crew Award.

Three new NHRA national and three track records were set this weekend at Edgewater Sports Park: Robert Book of Frankfort, Ill., set the new standard in A/D Comp Eliminator with a run of 6.656 seconds and 203.85 mph; Steve Krumlauf of Westerville, Ohio drove his '88 Pontiac GT/J to a record time of 10.742 and 124.00 mph in the Super Stock category; Dave Edwards of Washington, Ohio took home the national record in L/SA Stock Eliminator with a pass of 11.708 seconds. Federal-Mogul Dragster super star, Dave Hirata bested his own track e.t. record with a run of 5.549 seconds. The Federal-Mogul Funny Car category had two track records broken. The low e.t. record was eclipsed by Chuck Cheeseman with a time of 5.902 seconds. In addition, Danny Townsend broke the track speed record with a speed of 249.65 mph.

Cheeseman on a mission, secures top spot

CLEVES, OHIO-The second day of qualifying at Edgewater Sports Park continued under ideal weather conditions. With the grandstands filled to near capacity, enthusiastic race fans watched as drivers from eight racing categories made their run at the ¼ mile track located in the tri-state area of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

Dave Hirata leapfrogged the field to take the number one position from Winfield, Mo., resident Jeff Wilson in the Federal-Mogul Dragster division. Meanwhile, Federal-Mogul Funny Car pilot Chuck Cheeseman of Galena, Ohio, showed why he is the man to beat regaining the top spot with a track e.t. record run of 5.902 seconds at 247.72 mph.

In Competition Eliminator, Jerry Arnold of Kalamazoo, Mich., remained the No. 1 qualifier with a time of 8.475 (-0.665 under index) seconds. Followed by Brian Browell of Lafayette, Ind., with a time of 7.416 (-0.614 under index) seconds.

In Super Stock, Jerry Silveus of Van Buren, Ohio, remained on the top spot with a 10.507 second run against a 10.20 index. Sexton, from Fairborn, Ohio, remained in the second position .006 seconds behind the number one qualifier.

Dayton, Ohio., resident Don Holmes over-powered the field to secure the top spot in the Stock Eliminator category. Holmes drove his K/SA, '77 Firebird to the No. 1 qualifying position with a run of 11.543 seconds on a 12.95 index.

Gates open at 8:00 a.m. and eliminations start at 9:00 a.m. Eliminations for Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car will begin at 1:00 p.m. The following are Saturday's qualifying results from the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Edgewater Sports Park:

Division 3: Wilson, Townsend on top

CLEVES, OHIO - The NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series made its fourth stop of the year today with more than 500 racecars from eight racing categories competing for the $158,000 in cash and contingency awards.

In the first round of time trials at Edgewater Sports Park's Summer Thunder event, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Jeff Wilson and Federal-Mogul Funny Car pilot Danny Townsend set the pace for this weekend's activities by racing to Friday's top qualifying positions in their respective classes.

Wilson, of Winfield, Mo., took the number one spot and remained the one to beat in the Federal-Mogul Dragster division with a run of 5.648 seconds. In the Funny Car field, Townsend, of Muncie, Ind., outdueled Glendale Heights, Ill., resident Marc White to lead all other drivers with an elapsed time of 5.965 seconds.

In Competition Eliminator, Don Trasin of Pinkerington, Ohio, was the number one qualifier with a perfect run of 8.900 seconds, leaving the rest of the field to fight for the remaining positions.

In Super Stock, Jerry Silveus of Van Buren, Ohio drove his '99 Firebird to the top qualifying position narrowly beating out Michael Beachy of Kokomo, Ind, by .004 seconds.

Don Holmes of Dayton, Ohio, emerged as the leader from the other competitors in the Stock Eliminator class on Friday. Holmes drove his '77 Firebird to the No. 1 qualifying position with a run of 11.578 seconds on a 12.95 index.

Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday at Edgewater Sports Park. Gates open at 9:00 a.m. and racing begins at 10:00 a.m.
