MISSION RACEWAY PARK HOSTS RECORD SETTING EVENT
MISSION, B.C., Can. - Following two days of on-again, off-again rain, snow and hail, the Federal-Mogul dragsters and funny cars made their first qualifying attempts this morning and ran eliminations this afternoon.
The results were worth the wait.
Mission Raceway Park placed itself solidly in the record books establishing the quarter-mile as one of the quickest and fastest in North America. Three elapsed times and two mile per hour runs made it into the top 10 quickest and fastest in NHRA history. One of those was Pat Austin's national record-setting 5.598 second effort.
Number one qualifier Melanie Troxel, Littleton, Colo., defeated Mark Hentges, Federal Way, Wash., claiming the FMD title and her first win of the season. Troxel ran a 5.456/264 over Hentges 5.578/249 effort.
"We knew the car was hurt going into the final round and we decided not to go for the mph record," said Troxel. "The car was very consistent today and we are very excited about the rest of the season."
The 26-year old beat Mission, B.C., resident Ken Rempel in round one and reset the event elapsed time record at 5.442 in the semifinals defeating Duane Shield of Las Vegas.
Reigning division champion, Dale Carlson, Olympia, Wash., was defeated in round one.
Pete Swayne picked up his second consecutive win defeating Pat Austin, Tacoma, Wash. Swayne clocked a 5.788/235 to Austin's losing 5.832/218. Austin suffered an engine fire near the finish line ending his effort to catch the Orange, Calif., resident.
Swayne dedicated the win to his mother-in-law who suffered a heart attack last week. "We broke some parts in the previous round and didn't think we could make it back, but the Austins waited until we were ready to run. That's true sportsmanship," an elated Swayne said.
Swayne defeated Russ Parker, Salem, Ore., in round one of eliminations. Bucky Austin, uncle to Pat, left before the green light handing the semifinal win to Swayne.
