Sunday Eliminations:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
IOWA NATIVES SWEEP DOUGLAS
DOUGLAS, Wyo. - It was a clean sweep for Iowa residents in the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car classes at the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Douglas International Raceway Sunday. David Wells of LeMars, Iowa, won in the dragster category, and Vern Moats of Des Moines, Iowa, won in Funny Car.
Although the NHRA's West Central Division championship chase is halfway through its 1999 season; this is the first Federal-Mogul Series race of the year for Wells, who had surgery over the winter to correct a heart murmur. When Wells was ready to return to racing his business, an ice-cream plant in Iowa, was damaged in an explosion keeping Wells tending to business rather than racing.
After taking the number-one qualifying position with a 6.121-second run at 232.71 mph, Wells had a single pass in the first round of eliminations. He defeated Darryl Hitchman of Hanford, Calif., with a 6.149-second pass at 229.12 mph in round two and in the final his 6.112-second, 229.78 mph against Ed Schmeeckle of Gothenburg, Neb., was good for the title.
"What a weekend," beamed a jubilant Wells, the defending NHRA West Central Division champion. "It's a good start, now if we can keep it going, we might be able to catch up on the rest of the season."
Moats, who was runner-up at this event a year ago, faced off with Kurt Prososky of Bellevue, Neb., in round one. Moats made a 6.220-second, 230.02 mph run. In the second round he went up against Ponder, Texas' Todd Simpson, and beat him with a 6.315 second, 229.20-mph pass. In the final Moats tangled with No. 1 qualifier Roger Bateman of Calgary, Alb., Can., and won with a 6.442 second pass at 226.66 mph.
Winners in other categories at Douglas included Tom Snyder, Longmont, Colo., in Comp; Joe LoCicero, Lithonia, Ga., in Super Stock; Kevin Helms, Byers, Colo., in Stock; Ethan Conyers, Boulder, Colo., in Super Comp; Greg Carrillo, Phoenix, Ariz., in Super Gas; and Terry Lacy, McPherson, Kan., in Super Street.
