BRAINERD, Minn. -- Rain delayed eliminations until 6 p.m. today for the NHR A Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Brainerd International Raceway. The second of six events in the west central division.

F/M funny car and dragster completed one round of competition. Eliminations will continue tomorrow (Monday) at 9 a.m. The second round of F/M dragster and funny car is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.

FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES BRAINERD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
BRAINERD, Minn. - Rain coupled with a 6 p.m. curfew forced cancellation of the final of four qualifying rounds in the Federal-Mogul (F/M) dragster and funny car divisions at Brainerd International Raceway.

Sam Blue and Mark Kinser retained their top qualifying positions in F/M funny car and dragster respectively, for Sunday's final eliminations. The event is the second of six events in the west central division of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series.

Blue's 5.870 second qualifying effort from yesterday kept the Red Wing, Minn. native in the number one spot. "It's great to be the number one qualifier in my home state," said Blue. "Now all I have to do is put this Sturdiwheat Pancake flopper in the winners circle."

Vern Moats, Des Moines, Iowa, is number two, 5.872/248.67, Cy Chesterman, Sioux Falls, Iowa is third in the eight-car field.

Kinser from Grimes, Iowa, remained number one improving his elapsed time by 2/100s of a second from 5.66 to 5.64 today.

Other number one qualifiers include Doug Engels, Waterdown, S.D., in Competition Eliminator, Randall Klein, Lincoln, Neb., in Super Stock and Jim Burg, Deerfield, Wis., in stock.

Gates open at 8 a.m. tomorrow with final eliminations in all classes scheduled for 9 a.m. First round of F/M funny car and dragster will begin at noon.

BRAINERD, Minn. - Sam Blue and Mark Kinser led opening day qualifying in funny car and dragster respectively, at Brainerd International Raceway. The second of six events on the west central division of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series.

Sam Blue, Red Wing, Minn., drove his family-backed "Steadiwheat Pancakes" Oldsmobile Cutlass to a 5.870 second elapsed time at 244.51 mph edging the winningest Federal-Mogul funny car driver in the west central division, Vern Moats, Des Moines, Iowa, by two-thousandths of a second for the number one spot.

Mark Kinser, Grimes, Iowa, led the Federal-Mogul dragster category with a 5.661 / 251.79 effort.

Other qualifying leaders include Doug Engels, Watertown, S.D., in Competition Eliminator, Dennis Nelson, Hugo, Minn., in Super Stock and Jim Burg, Deerfield, Wisc., in Stock.

Qualifying continues tomorrow. Gates open at 8 a.m., with dragster and funny car qualifying scheduled for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
