Saturday Qualifying Final:

by Michael L. Jex ASHCROFT, B.C. -- Racers and fans were treated with cooler temperatures and partly cloudy skies for the final day of qualifying here at Nl'akapxm Eagle Motorplex. In Federal-Mogul Dragster, Dale Carlson drove his Giant Bicycles entry to the number one qualifying position, passing a game John Shoemaker in the final round of qualifing. Carlson pushed out a head gasket on the bright orange, yellow, and green dragster on the run, showing sparks and flames out the back of his dragster. "We pushed a head gasket out early in the run, and it leaned out the motor, and kicked some rods out of it." commented Carlson. "At least this happened today, instead of during elminations." In Federal-Mogul Funny Car '98 Winternationals winner John Hyland, from Springfield, Ore., ran 6.016 233.70 during this morning's session to lead the field. He had trouble in the final round of qualifying, when he lost a blower belt. "It was on a good run till the bumps in the left lane. When I hit the bumps, it unloaded the tires, and the engine rpm went to the moon, throwing off the blower belt and tearing up a bunch of stuff." said Hyland, who added, "Lane choice is going to be real important for the high horsepower cars tomorrow." Clint Sallee, from Glendive Mont., drove his C/Dragster to the top of Competition Elimnator, running (-.555) 7.255 on the 7.81 index. Terry Sherrill's 57 Corvette is one of the fastest cars in Super Stock. It's also the number one qualifier this weekend at 8.716 (-1.024) under the 9.75 index, going over 155 miles per hour at the finish line. The number one qualifier in Stock is Chuck Rayburn from Castro Valley CA. He drove his 1971 Dodge Challenger to a new National Record in B/SA, running -1.216 10.564 under the 11.78 index. The final day of Racing action gets under way tomorrow with Eliminations starting at 10:30 AM. Sunday Results:
Bateman, Shoemaker win on an
emotional afternoon in Canada

by Michael L. Jex, SUMMIT FastNews

ASHCROFT, BC - In one of the most moving tributes this reporter has ever witnessed, racing today was dedicated to Don Stephenson, who suffered a fatal heart attack here on Saturday. His Super Gas friends made a parade lap down the Nl'akapxm Eagle Motorplex quarter-mile, idling down the track side by side in tribute to their fallen friend and comrade. The cpmbination of a silent and emotional crowd and 52 Super Gas racecars at idle was a fitting tribute to this great friend of racing. In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Roger Bateman from Calgary, Alberta, made it a Canadian clean sweep by winning both Federal-Mogul events held in Canada for 1998. He defeated John Hyland from Springfield, Ore., in the final round, running a 6.209 at 231.24 to Hyland's 6.337, 230.06. Bateman won at Mission Raceway Park three weeks ago, and has been impressive since signing MOPAC Auto Parts as a new sponsor for 1998. "We got lucky it went down the left lane," said Bateman. He added, "We totally changed the tuneup just for that lane. We figured if we could let them (Hyland) see us out there ahead of him, it might help us too." In Federal-Mogul Dragster, John Shoemaker passed Dale Carlson at the 1,000- foot mark to win for the first time in 1998. Shoemaker ran 5.840 at 233.52 to Carlson's blowe-belt-losing 6.043, 183.56 effort. "In 2nd gear, Dale was right alongside, so I revved the motor higher than I've ever done before. That was to make sure to maintain the momentum I had," said Shoemaker. "I shifted into high, and then he was gone." Jim Warter from Fox Island Wash., drove his B/SM Firebird past Jim Kennedy's F/Altered to win in Competition Eliminator. Warter ran 9.017 (-.463) to Kennedy's 8.831 (-.429) in the final, winning by two car-lengths.
