Saturday Qualifying Final:
SIOUX CITY’S CHESTERMAN TOPS FUNNY CAR QUALIFYING SCRIBNER, Neb. -- Results Saturday after the final rounds of qualifying from the Nebraska Motorplex, the fifth of six events in the NHRA West Central Division’s Federal- Mogul Drag Racing Series: Sioux City, Iowa, resident Cy Chesterman is the number one qualifier in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the Nebraska Motorplex. Chesterman, who is currently chasing Vern Moats for the divisional funny car title, ran a 6.064 e.t. to Moats’ 6.116 e.t. Moats, of Des Moines, Iowa, is running a new car after totaling his other car in an incident at the Mile High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Denver. With the heavy air and heat today, it looked like Sam Blue of Red Wing, Minn., would be the top qualifier with a 6.129 run in the second round of qualifying. However, in the third and final round Chesterman and Moats both bettered Blue’s time. In the Federal-Mogul Dragster class yesterday’s top qualifier Melanie Troxel, Englewood, Colo., dropped to the fifth position. Bob McCosh of Columbia, Mo., who did not make any run yesterday made a 5.819 second pass to take the top spot. Although he improved on yesterday’s run, David Wells, LeMars, Iowa, remained in the second position. Omaha’s Scott Hartley rebounded from the problems he had yesterday to get his a-fuel dragster down the track on a 5.877 second pass. The run was good enough to finish qualifying in the third spot. Other top qualifiers today were David Rampy, of Piedmont, Ala., in Comp Eliminator; Randy Mans, of Rogers, Minn., in Super Stock; and Bob Shaw, of Byers, Colo., in Stock. Rampy and Shaw each maintained their leads from yesterday’s qualifying, while Mans overtook Danny Helmer. Sunday Results:CHESTERMAN LEADS FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR POLE TO POLE SCRIBNER, Neb. -- Final results Sunday from Nebraska Motorplex, the fifth of six events in NHRA’s West Central Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series schedule: Cy Chesterman of Sioux City, Iowa, took his number one Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying position straight into the winner’s circle at the Nebraska Motorplex Sunday. Chesterman, who is chasing Des Moines, Iowa, resident Vern Moat for the West Central Division funny car title, made a leap in the standings with the win, as Moats went out in the semi-finals. Chesterman took on Sam Blue of Red Wing, Minn. in the final. Chesterman bested Blue with a 6.134 second run to Blue’s 6.787 second effort. In the Federal-Mogul Dragster class, LeMars, Iowa, resident David Wells took the lead in the divisional title standings by beating Mark Kinser of Grimes, Iowa, in the final. Wells ran a 5.861 e.t. (elapsed time) at 245.56 mph to Kinser’s 5.861 e.t. at 242.65. The win also put Wells back in to the top 10 in the national championship standings. Coming in to the event this weekend, Wells was trailing Melanie Troxel of Englewood, Colo., by just four points. Kinser beat Troxel in the first round of eliminations today. With one more West Central Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event to go, the title is still up for grabs. The final event in the division will be held at Bandimere Speedway in Denver in September. Gary Stinnett of Emporia, Kan., took home two titles this weekend. One in Super Stock and one in Super Comp. Winning two categories at one race is difficult enough, but Stinnett pulled off the same feat at the last NHRA event he attended, the national event at Bandimere Speedway last month. For Stinnett, both wins here were his first in divisional competition this year, in each category. In other categories Comp Eliminator John Fairleigh, Scott City, Kan., took the crown; Jim Cimarolli, Sulpher Springs, Texas, took the win in Stock; Sheldon Gecker of Surprise, Ariz., won Super Gas; Roger Benne, Scribner, Neb., was the champion in Super Street; Tom Gilligan of Freemont, Neb., won the Super Bike title; and Eric Feucht, Canton, S.D., was the Junior Dragster champion.
