Friday Qualifying:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BAYTOWN’S SHANE GAY LEADS DRAGSTERS HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK, Baytown, Texas -- Competing in front of a home-town crowd, Baytown’s Shane Gay led qualifying in the Federal-Mogul Dragster class after one of three scheduled time-trail attempts at the Pennzoil Winter Classic, the first of six rounds in the 1998 NHRA South Central Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. In a wild qualifying session for the dragsters, Gay’s In-N-Out Burger-sponsored entry recorded a 5.53-second run at just 198 mph, narrowly avoiding a collision with Mansfield’s Bill Ancona, whose car careened out of control when the left-rear tire deflated at the finish line. “Out of my peripheral vision I could see Bill was in trouble,” said Gay. “I could see sparks coming from his car, and the front wheels looked like they were simply flapping in the air.” Explained Ancona, “At the 1,000-feet mark I heard a loud bang, which was the left tire exploding. The front end [of the car] came around on me and I had the steering wheel turned hard to the left. So hard it broke the right front wheel. As I crossed the centerline Shane squeezed by me.” Ancona admitted he expected the car to crash but a superior driving job kept the car upright. Damage, however, was significant with the rear wing and transmission broken, as well as the front end of the race car. Ancona’s team will assess the damage overnight before deciding if the car can be repaired for Saturday’s final qualifying attempts. In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category Artesia, N.M.’s Tate Branch led the field with a career-best 5.73- second run in his Dodge Avenger-bodied entry. Branch’s run, too, was action filled. As the funny car approached the finish line the windshield broke, sending pieces into the air and the cockpit. Adding to Branch’s problems the engine caught fire as it kicked two connecting rods. Branch brought the car to a safe halt and will make repairs in time for Saturday’s qualifying attempts. Time Trials continue at Houston Raceway Park Saturday, with the gates opening at 8:00 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Car receive two more qualifying attempts at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Saturday Qualifying Final:
GAY RECORDS 5.39, PUTS LOCK ON POLE POSITION HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK, Baytown, Texas -- Rookie driver Shane Gay of Baytown, Texas, claimed the second No. 1 qualifying position of his short career with a career-best 5.397-second run to lead all Federal-Mogul Dragsters at the Pennzoil Winter Classic. Gay, driving the Southern California-based In-N-Out Burger dragster owned by Jerry Darien and Ken Meadows, made his competition debut in the Federal-Mogul Dragster category at Pomona Raceway, Pomona, Calif., two weeks ago, qualifying on the pole position with a 5.44-second run. Saturday at Houston Raceway Park Gay improved on that number with the 5.39-second run, the third-quickest pass in class history. Three tenths of a second separated Gay from his nearest competitor, Tulsa, Okla.’s Shelly Howard, who qualified second with a 5.69-second run. The spread between first and second places in Federal- Mogul Funny Car was somewhat smaller as just two hundredths of a second separated Tate Branch and Jackie Stidham. Branch, of Artesia, N.M., claimed the pole position with a career-best 5.73-second lap recorded Friday evening; Stidham ran a 5.75 Saturday. Sunday Results:GAY WINS FOR FIRST TIME IN SECOND TRY HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK, Baytown, Texas -- Shane Gay of Baytown, Texas, claimed his first victory in the Federal- Mogul Dragster category at just his second race in the five- second, 250-mph machines. Competing at the Pennzoil Winter Classichttp://www.nhraonline.com South Central division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event, and facing drag-racing legend Gene Snow in the final round, Gay sprinted to a 5.70-second victory when Snow’s dragster spun the rear tires just off the starting line. Joining Gay in the Houston Raceway Park winners’ circle was another first-time winner, Tate Branch, who edged opponent Todd Simpson in a close final-round duel, 5.87- seconds to 5.98 seconds. Driving the Southern California-based In-N-Out Burger- sponsored entry, Gay qualified on the pole position with a career-best 5.39-second run, the third quickest run in class history, and proceeded to march through eliminations. Before facing Gay in the final, Snow, of Fort Worth, Texas, speculated his only hope of a win lay with a possible malfunction for the Burger car. Said Snow, “The only chance I’ve got is if he smokes the [rear] tires or breaks. I can’t live with them; the best I will run is a 5.50.” As the Christmas Tree starting system blinked green it was Snow, not Gay, whose car smoked the rear tires. Gay’s car shook the rear tires, forcing Gay to momentarily lift off the throttle, then charge to the finish line for the win. “[Houston Raceway Park] is where I scored my first NHRA win four years ago in a Super Comp dragster, and now I’ve scored my first win in the Federal-Mogul Dragster here,” enthused Gay. “We were afraid of smoking the tires because the track [surface] was so cold. The car violently shook the tires at 200 feet, and I had to get completely off the throttle. I didn’t see Snow go by so I got back on the gas.” For Branch of Artesia, N.M., it was a case of sixth time is a charm. A former Super Comp racer like Gay, Branch’s Mack Energy-sponsored Dodge Avenger had been to the final round five times in the Federal-Mogul Funny Cars previosuly before taking the win light. The excitement of the moment, however, almost cost him the win. Branch explained, “I had a feeling I’d got the lead and then I messed up. I shifted [the car] into high gear too soon. I was excited I might win and I punched it into high gear about 1,000 rpm too soon. I knew I’d made a mistake and I just had to hope [Simpson] wouldn’t come by; I just wanted to get to the finish line as quickly as I could.”
