GOOD WEATHER MAKES FOR GREAT RACING AT HALLSVILLE RACEWAY

        HALLSVILLE, Texas -- Results Friday after the first rounds of
qualifying from Hallsville Raceway, in the fifth of six events in the South
Central Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:

        In the Hallsville sunshine, cars raced down the track pair after
pair at Hallsville Raceway.  The good weather made for excellent track
conditions good, old-fashioned drag racing

        In the end, top qualifiers for the day were Darrell Russell of
Cypress, Texas, in Federal-Mogul Dragster; Jackie Stidham of Chickasha,
Okla., in Federal-Mogul Funny Car; Greg Williams of Carthage, Texas, in
Comp Eliminator; Bob Dennis of Shorter, Ala., in Super Stock; and Ronnie
Cardwell of Ruston, La., in Stock.

        Russell made a good showing in his first run of the weekend,
covering the quarter mile in 5.772 second at 246.37 mph.  And Stidham, who
was the South Central Division Funny Car champion last year, ran a 5.899
e.t. at 237.47 mph.

        Qualifying continues Saturday at Hallsville Raceway.  Gates open at
8 a.m. and racing starts at 9 a.m.

IN QUEST FOR THIRD SERIES VICTORIES OF THE YEAR SIMPSON, RUSSELL
QUALIFY IN TOP SPOTS

        HALLSVILLE, Texas -- Results Saturday after the final
rounds of qualifying from Hallsville Raceway, the fifth of six
events in the South Central Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag
Racing Series:

        Federal-Mogul Funny Car pilot Todd Simpson and Federal-
Mogul Dragster driver Darrell Russell are each trying to win
their third NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series events of the
season.  They both made a good start Saturday, with Simpson, of
Ponder, Texas, running 5.824 elapsed time (e.t.) and Russell,
of Cypress, Texas, making a 5.869 run, making them the top
qualifiers in their classes.

        Simpson was the runner up at the first event at Houston
Raceway Park and won the next two at the Texas Motorplex and
State Capitol Dragway.

        Russell took wins at the Motorplex and State Capitol,
and was runner up at the last South Central Division event at
Memphis Motorsports Park.

        Top qualifiers in other classes were Brian Self of
Houston, in Comp Eliminator; Brent Johnson of Pasadena,
Texas, in Super Stock; and Jeff Teuton of Houma, La., in
Stock.

        Gates at Hallsville Raceway open at 8:00 a.m.
Sunday and eliminations begin at 9:00 a.m.  Federal-Mogul
Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars begin round-one of
eliminations at noon.

RUSSELL BLOWS INTO SECOND CONSECUTIVE SERIES WIN

        HALLSVILLE, Texas -- Final results Sunday from Hallsville
Raceway, the fifth of six events in the South Central Division’s
NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series schedule:

        Although there were nagging doubts all day about weather
or not South Central Division Federal-Mogul racers could outrun
the rain, the good guys did prevail.  There were spurts of down
time throughout the day but officials at Hallsville Raceway kept
the cars moving down the track to get the final rounds in.

        In the Federal-Mogul Dragster final, Darrell Russell
took on drag racing veteran Gene “the Snowman” Snow.  Both cars
made arrow-straight runs and Russell’s blown alcohol dragster out
ran Snow’s injected nitro car. Russell (Cypress, Texas) ran a
5.769 e.t. at 240.21 mph to Snow’s (Fortworth, Texas) 5.896 e.t.
at 234.67 mph. For Russell the win is his second consecutive
Federal-Mogul series win and third of the season.

        In a replay of the Funny Car final at the last Federal-
Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park earlier
this month, Tate Branch faced Todd Paton.  This time, however,
the outcome was more to Branch’s liking.  In a straight-up, head-
to-head run, Branch beat Paton 5.998 seconds to 5.935 seconds.
Branch won the first event of the season at Houston Raceway Park
in February.

        In other categories Comp Eliminator driver Raymond Martin
of Houston, won his second event of the season; Terry Pearson of
Spanish Fort, Ala., won in Super Stock; Jeff Hefler of Mansfield,
Texas, took the win in Stock; Jimmy Lewis of Mesquite, Texas won
in Super Gas; J.R. Wallace of Grand Prairie, Texas was the winner
in Super Comp; Rickey Mayes of Dallas, Texas, was the champion in
Super Street; and Mike Hullett of Lancaster, Texas won in
Sportsman Motorcycle.
