FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1998 NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- Results Friday after the first rounds of qualifying from Rockingham Dragway, the third of six events in the Southeast Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. Due to a three-hour rain delay, Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars did not get a chance to run today, but will make their qualifying passes Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The rest of the Federal-Mogul categories did make qualifying passes and in Stock Eliminator Greg Rowe, Bridgeton, N.C., is in the top spot, having run 1.157 seconds under his index. Super Stocker Joe Skinner, Columbia Station, Ohio, ran 1.22 seconds under his index to make him the number one qualifier so far. And in Competition Eliminator Jonathan Aloisio, West Chester, Pa., ran just .563 seconds under his index to make in the top man. Saturday Qualifying Final:

1998 NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES ROCKINGHAN DRAGWAY, ROCKINGHAM, N.C. Results Saturday after the final rounds of qualifying from Rockingham Dragway, the third of six events in the Southeast Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. After missing Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying runs Friday, due to rain, the show today was well worth the wait, as almost every pair down the track made side-by-side runs. There was a tense moment when Skip Gladstone’s dragster suddenly made a sharp right turn into the wall and continued along the wall up on his side. The car righted itself and Gladstone was unhurt, but he had to pull out of the event. Michael Gunderson of Middleburg, Fla., is the top qualifier in the Federal-Mogul class, running a 5.566 e.t. at 252.38 mph. And Tony Bartone from Manhasset, N.Y., is in the top spot in Federal-Mogul Funny Car. Bartone ran a 5.827 e.t. at 249.37 mph. In other Federal-Mogul categories, all of yesterday’s top qualifiers maintained their positions. They are Jonathan Aloisio in Comp Eliminator; Joe Skinner in Super Stock; and Greg Rowe in Stock. 1998 NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES ROCKINGHAM DRAGWAY, ROCKINGHAM, N.C. ROCKINGHAM, N.C. -- Final results Sunday from Rockingham Dragway, the third of six events in the Southeast Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. The weather was beautiful and the racing was stout here today. Three of the five top qualifiers went to the finals and two held on to win the event; and the winner in Federal- Mogul Funny Car hasn’t won a race in 10 years, and both of the cars he tunes won the race. Full-time crew chief and part-time Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Fred Mandoline put together a string of arrow- straight runs throughout the weekend and took out Bob Newberry in the semi-finals to meet Tony Bartone, Manhasset, N.Y., in the final. Mandoline of Schiller Park, Ill., ran 5.755 e.t. at 249.51 mph to Bartone’s 5.905 e.t. at 242.52 mph. Mandoline’s other effort was on Michael Gunderson’s Federal-Mogul Dragster. Mandoline is Gunderson’s crew chief. Gunderson of Middleburg, Fla., was on a streak all weekend and was to face division rival Jay Payne in the final. However, Payne, from Upland, Calif., had blown three motors in his previous three runs and was unable to make the call giving Gunderson a bye run in the final. In Comp Eliminator Jonathan Aloisio, West Chester, Pa., did not give an inch on his number on qualifying position and went on to run a 8.507 e.t. in the final at 165.07 mph. Joining Mandoline, Gunderson and Alsoisio in the Winner’s Circle were Eddie Taylor of Wilmington, N.C., in Super Stock; Arnold Greene, Matthews, N.C., in Stock; Scotty Richardson Goodlettsville, Tenn., in Super Comp; Larry Ericksmoen, St. Petersburg, Fla., in Supergas; and Richard Alford, Angler, N.C., in Super Street.
