Friday Qualifying:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Reynolds, Ga. -- Stunning track record performances were turned in on the first day of qualifying at the NHRA Federal-Mogul Southwest Series event at Silver Dollar Raceway Friday. Michael Gunderson of Florida ran 245.16 mph to top Greg Roberts track standard in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Todd Paton of Ontario, Canada, ran 5.99 seconds at 237.02 mph in Federal-Mogul Funny Car to set a new standard for elapsed time in that category. Their efforts were made even more stunning because of the hot and humid conditions that remain over the Southeastern portion of the country. Conditions were not considered good by many racers who opted to run Saturday when hopes are high that the temperatures will drop, if only slightly. Qualifying and time trials will continue Saturday at 10 a.m. and the Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars are scheduled to run at 5 p.m. and again at 8 p.m. Tickets, including a pit pass, are $20. Saturday Final Qualifying Report:
Gunderson, Paton Continue the Record Pace at Silver Dollar Federal-Mogul Speed Fest Reynolds, Ga. -- Stunning track record performances continued on the second day of qualifying at the NHRA Federal-Mogul Southwest Series event at Silver Dollar Raceway Saturday. Michael Gunderson of Florida upped his day-old record to 245.29 mph and Todd Paton of Ontario, Canada, ran 5.950 seconds at 239.02 mph in Federal-Mogul Funny Car to up his new standard for elapsed time in that category. Moreover, Todd Simpson, of Ponder, Texas, tied Patons 5.950 mark but is now in the number two qualifying spot because of his slower 238.09 mph speed. In the evening qualifying session most Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Car teams elected to sit on their earlier effort. Only Mark Bellingham changed positions with his 6.30 Federal-Mogul Funny Car effort. However, in Competition Eliminator, No. 1 qualifier Rick Hord ran nearly .60-under his Index, narrowly missing an Index adjustment that would have made his racing effort on Sunday a bit more difficult. Gates open Sunday at 8 a.m. with racing eliminations for the 250 mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars beginning at noon. Tickets, including a pit pass, are $20. Children under 12, when accompanied by an adult, are free. Saturdays final qualifying Federal-Mogul Dragster 1. Michael Gunderson, Middleburg, Fla. 5.750 245.29* 2. Sunday Results:Kelley, Simpson grab important Federal-Mogul Points with impressive Silver Dollar victories Reynolds, Georgia -- Final results for the second event of the fourth-event NHRA Southeast Division Federal-Mogul Series. A total of 344 drivers ran for a share of $133,055 up from grabs at comfy Silver Dollar Raceway, about 80 miles south of Atlanta. Upstart Doug Kelley made a statement at the Silver Dollar Raceway in Federal-Mogul Dragster. He has arrived. His 5.78 in the final over Bob Bears gallant, black-tracking, sideways run was a dramatic final to what may prove to be a pivotal event when the final standings are added up at the end of the year, both divisionally and nationally. Perhaps the most important race came when Bears upset Michael Gunderson in the semifinals. Gunderson is three years into his five-year master plan to be the Federal-Mogul Champion in Federal-Mogul Dragster. Youd have to say he was way ahead of schedule coming into the fourth Southeast Division event of the year. He had but himself into the middle of the of the battle, currently leading in the Southeast Division and the 20 points shy in the national points. He came into Silver Dollar having won the previous two Southeast Division events at Orlando and Rockingham and dearly wanted to post another at Reynolds. Then he met Bears in the semi-final and the game plan, temporarily, was disrupted. The two Todds, Paton and Simpson, chased each other from the NHRA South Central country of Texas and ended up in the Dixie Rebel stronghold of Silver Dollar Raceway to try to pad their Federal-Mogul points totals. The two stood Nos. 2 and 3 in the national points and Simpson led the South Central Division. Southeast Division points leader in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car class, Tony Bartone, usually travels to the South from his Northeast base, but stayed close to home, opting to run in Englishtown, N.J., at the NHRA Mopar Parts Nationals, so the prize was there to be picked like a fresh Georgia Peach. Paton can hardly be called a carpetbagger from Texas, however, as he runs in the South Central Division despite being based in Ontario, Canada. Nonetheless, Paton and Simpson began their attack on the locals by both qualifying at 5.950 to reset the track elapsed time record for the class. Paton was the No. 1 qualifier based on is 239.29 mph speed compared to 238.09 mph for Simpson. As predicted, they advanced to meet in the finals where Simpson slapped a big victory on the scoreboards when Patons tires rattled and broke loose at mid-track. The win will have a bearing on the national points listing depending on how Bob Newberry did at Englishtown. Mike Saye padded his Federal-Mogul Southeast points lead by driving his Buick-powered G/Altered Olds Cutlass to his first Federal-Mogul Southeast win of the year, beating a red-lighting Jim Kimbrough in the final after upsetting the thundering AA/Altered Corvette of red-lighting Rick Hord in the semi-final. Hord ran as quick as 7.10 before losing. No new records were backed up at the event.
