Friday Qualifying:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Results Friday after the first rounds of qualifying from Gainesville Raceway, in the first of six events in the Southeast Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. After several months of the off-season, participants from up and down the east coast have come the first NHRA Federal-Mogul event of the year. Even the unseasonably cool weather here has not stopped the 350 racers who have come to get their first taste of competition in the 1998 season. In Federal-Mogul Dragster competition, Jay Payne, of Upland, Calif., is the top qualifier so far. Payne ran a 5.581 e.t. at 249.72 mph. In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category, defending division champion Tony Bartone is in the top spot. Bartone, of Manhasset, N.Y., leads the field with a 6.024 e.t. at 239.42 mph. Saturday Qualifying Final:
GAINESVILLE, Fla.-- Results Saturday after the final rounds of qualifying from Gainesville Raceway, the first of six events in the Southeast Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. This has turned out to be an unusual weekend at Gainesville Raceway. Temperatures have dipped into the 50s, there is a wind chill factor to add to that and the number one qualifier in the Federal-Mogul Dragster category just earned his license on Friday. Skip Gladstone, who is driving Rich McPhillips’ A-fuel dragster, is in the top spot after making just two qualifying runs today. In Federal-Mogul Funny Car number two driver in the world, Tony Bartone, earned the top qualifying position. Gladstone, of West Chester, Pa., ran a 5.427 e.t. at 249.37 mph in today’s qualifying session to take the top spot and Bartone, of Manhasset, N.Y., ran a 5.724 e.t. at 249.72 mph. Other top qualifiers are Competition Eliminator driver Scott Tidwell of Pinson, Ala.; Woodro Josey of Byron, Ga., in Stock Eliminator; and Super Stocker Jim Boudreay of Tewksbury, Mass. Gates at Gainesville Raceway open at 8:30 a.m. Sunday and eliminations begin at 9:30 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars begin round-one of eliminations at noon. Sunday Results:Final results Sunday from Gainesville Raceway, the first of six events in the Southeast Division’s NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series schedule: While the temperatures remained cool today, at least the sun was out and there was some heat on the track. The evidence is in the final numbers; elapsed times, speeds and indexes. The man who is a veteran drag racer but a novice Federal-Mogul Dragster driver stole the show. Skip Gladstone completed his licensing passes on Friday, became the number one qualifier at the event on Saturday, and earned his first Federal-Mogul Dragster win on Sunday. Gladstone took on Doug Kelley in the final round and he ran a 5.841 at 204.26 to Kelley’s 7.505 at 129.38. Gladstone owned the best time of the event with a 5.424 and Jay Payne had the top speed at 256.55 mph. In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category, John Lawson of Joliet, Ill., took the win over Tony Bartone of Manhasset, N.Y. Bartone’s car broke on the line and Lawson went on to run a 6.093 at 242.39. The both the quickest e.t. in the class and the top speed belonged to Bartone; 5.702 and 251.39, respectively. Joining Gladstone and Lawson in the Winners’ Circle were, Doug Engels of Watertown, S.C., in Competition Eliminator; Donald Smith, Maggie, N.C., in Super Stock; Mark Lewis of Inman, S.C., in Stock Eliminator; Jim Perry of Orlando, Fla., in Super Comp; Cody Markwart of Seminole, Fla., in Super Gas; and Lamar Stevenson from Montgomery, Ala., in Super Street.
