GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS MAKE
FOR GREAT RACING AT NUMIDIA RACEWAY

        NUMIDIA, Pa. -- Results Friday after the first rounds
of qualifying from Numidia Raceway, in the fifth of six events
in NHRA’s Northeast Division’s Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:

        Relatively low humidity and temperatures made for
clean racing today at Numidia Raceway.  In the first qualifying
session today, Santo Volpe, Jim Boburka and Larry Hausch take
early poles.  Volpe, Euclid, Ohio, leads Comp Eliminator; Boburka
of Coraopolis, Pa., is number one in Super Stock; and the Super
Stock leader Hausch, is from North Canton, Ohio.

        Six of the eight Federal-Mogul categories made qualifying
runs and time trials today, with Federal-Mogul Dragsters and
Federal-Mogul Funny Cars getting their first shot at the track
tomorrow.

        Qualifying continues Saturday at Numidia Raceway with
gates opening at 8:00 a.m.  Racing starts at 9:00 a.m. with Federal-
Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars scheduled to run at 3 and 6 p.m.

BOZZELLI BLOWS OUT NUMIDIA RACEWAY RECORD

        NUMIDIA, Pa. -- Results Saturday after the final
rounds of qualifying from Numidia Raceway, the fifth of six
events in the NHRA’s Northeast Division’s Federal-Mogul Drag
Racing Series:

        Federal-Mogul Dragster pilot Cliff Bozzelli, set a
Numidia Raceway elapsed time record today during his final
qualifying run.  Bozzelli made a 5.66 second pass at 243.44
mph in the quarter-mile to take the top qualifying position
from Ron Still, of Smyrna, Del., who had just made a 5.75
second run.  Bozzelli, an Absecon, N.J., native, improved
on his previous qualifying run of 5.78.

        In Federal-Mogul Dragster, defending national
champion Frank Manzo is the number one qualifier, posting a
5.871 pass at 246.30 mph.  Manzo, of Morganville, N.J., took
the pole position from Paul Gill whose 5.894 e.t. had been
the number to beat.

        Other top qualifiers today were Santo Volpe, of
Euclid, Ohio, in Comp Eliminator; Jeff Sexton, of Fairborn,
Ohio, in Super Stock; and Larry Hausch, of North Canton, Ohio,
in Stock.  Volpe and Hausch each maintained their leads from
yesterday’s qualifying, while Sexton overtook Jim Borburka.

        Final eliminations begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. at Numidia
Raceway and gates open at 8:00 a.m.  Federal-Mogul Dragsters
and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars are scheduled to begin round-one
of eliminations at noon.

ARCH RIVALS MANZO AND NEWBERRY
FIGHT IT OUT IN FUNNY CAR FINAL

        NUMIDIA, Pa. -- Final results Sunday from Numidia
Raceway, the fifth of six events in NHRA’s Northeast
Division’s Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series schedule:

        Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Frank Manzo
successfully defended his Numidia Raceway championship today.
Manzo, of Morganville, N.J., defeated arch-rival Bob Newberry
who is a Schenctedy, N.Y., native, when Newberry overpowered
the track and got out of the groove.

        “We were fortunate today,” Manzo said of his 5.912,
243.57 mph winning run.  “Whenever Bob is in the next lane,
we always make the car more aggressive and today, it worked.” 

        Manzo and Newberry have squared off in the final
round of competition six times in 1998, with Manzo taking the
win light five times.  “We’ve raced against each other for a
long time and I have a lot of respect for Bob, so feel
comfortable with him in the next lane,” Manzo said.  “But
this is supposed to be a sport that we do for fun, to relax
from our daily grind.  But when we’re staged against each
other, it’s no sport, believe me.”

        In Federal-Mogul Dragster, number-one qualifier,
Cliff Bozzelli beat out Joe Rose, Jr.  Bozzelli, who reset
the Numidia Raceway elapsed time record yesterday, made a
5.770 second, 244.89 mph run in the final.  Bozzelli and
Rose, of Feasterville, Pa., are currently locked in a battle 
for the divisional championship.  Bozzelli leads Rose in the
fight.

        In other categories Comp Eliminator top qualifier
Santo Volpe, Euclid, Ohio, took the crown; Joe Scott, Sunbury,
Pa., won in Super Stock; Joe DeMarzo, Mahopac, N.Y., took the
win in Stock; Todd Beam, of Honey Brook, Pa., won Super Gas;
Jeff Kundratic, Fallston, Md., was the winner in Super Comp;
and Norm Szamocki, Montgomery, Pa., was the champion in Super
Street.
