As the next-to-last event that will decide the season’s NHRA Full Throttle world championships, plenty is at stake in Las Vegas at this 10th anniversary event. Every run will be important because a slip at this point could be worse than snake eyes at the other Strip’s craps tables. The venue is the same as in the spring, but the weather may be different, making for high drama at an event where previous world champions have been crowned.
2009 recap: Robert Hight gained an almost insurmountable points lead and closed on his first NHRA Funny Car title after driving to victory. Although he didn’t win in Pro Stock — Larry Morgan snapped a dry spell that dated back to Sonoma 2002 when he defeated Rickie Jones in that final — Mike Edwards also put a stranglehold on the class championship. Spencer Massey drove to his second Top Fuel win of the season, defeating Larry Dixon in the final, but Dixon pulled to within one point of Tony Schumacher’s lead entering the final event of the season. Although Andrew Hines was mathematically eliminated from Pro Stock Motorcycle championship consideration, he kept alive teammate Eddie Krawiec’s hopes for back-to-back championships when he defeated points leader Hector Arana in the final.
How to Get There: From the Las Vegas Strip and downtown, follow Interstate 15 north to Speedway Boulevard (Exit 54). Follow signs to the main parking area.
