Houston Raceway Park benefits from incredible atmospheric conditions because of its proximity to Trinity Bay, which feeds the facility cool air. The track’s first NHRA national event, in fall 1988, established HRP as one of the sport’s quickest with NHRA’s first four-second Top Fuel quarter-mile pass and a new national record. Since then, the track has been host to a dizzying array of record runs, including the first sub-4.5-second Top Fuel quarter-mile pass by Larry Dixon in 1999. In 2010, the state-of-the-art starting-line Tower Club will offer fans a VIP experience.
2009 recap: Reigning Top Fuel champ Tony Schumacher, Ashley Force Hood, Ron Krisher, and Craig Treble all got on the scoreboard for the first time in 2009, emerging as the winners at the record-breaking event. Favorable weather conditions throughout the weekend led to a slew of career bests and a pair of national records in the Pro Stock classes. The Pro Stock speed record was toppled three times when fans witnessed the four fastest speeds in Pro Stock history, topped by Greg Anderson’s 211.99 national record and six of the 10 quickest passes. The two-year-old Pro Stock Motorcycle e.t. record also fell when Matt Smith recorded the class’ quickest pass and reset the national record with a 6.865.
How to Get There: Baytown is about 25 miles east of downtown Houston. From downtown Houston, take I-10 east to SH 99 Grand Parkway (Exit 799) and go south to FM 565 (approximately 2 miles). Take FM 565 west (right), and the track is on the right.
