Results for Elimination Round 1
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel
at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Kenny Bernstein (Budweiser King Dragster) 0.492 4.739 303.37
 (L) Doug Herbert (Snap-On Tools Dragster) 0.471 5.966 155.49
10:19 AM Racing is starting about 20 minutes behind schedule in order to give the fans stuck in traffic a chance to get to their seats for the first round. We open with the middle of the Top Fuel field, the drivers who finished 6th and 7th in points in 1999. In two previous meetings this year Bernstein won both. Herbert grenaded an engine on his final qualifying attempt yesterday and today didn't go much better, his car hazing the tires on the launch, then disappearing in dense tire smoke about 100 feet out. Meanwhile Bernstein went right down the groove, with just light tire smoke on the top end of the run.
 (W) Joe Amato (Dynomax/Valvoline Dragster) 0.487 4.799 295.14
 (L) Don Lampus (expressautoparts.com Dragster) 0.510 4.857 276.97
Lampus led this one early, but he started spinning the tires hard at half track and Amato drove by to win by a margin of victory = 0.081 seconds (approximately 33 feet). Amato hazed the tires on the top end too, but only trailed light smoke, not the dense white stuff, and he managed to keep the car off the wall for the win.
 (W) David Grubnic (Montana Express Dragster) 0.406 6.496 229.98
 (L) Tony Schumacher (Exide Batteries Dragster) 0.392(R) 13.065 77.38
These two met once before this year, Schumacher with the win. This one will hurt Schumacher in the points, Schumacher with an early red light and shutting off as soon as he realized he'd fouled. Grubnic almost let him back in, however, the "Montana Express" boiling the hides and Grubnic pedaling several times to get to the finish line. That's Schumacher's first round one loss since Columbus last year.
 (W) Bob Vandergriff (Radiac Abrasives Dragster) 0.522 4.765 307.51
 (L) Craig Smith (Dragster) 0.522 8.003 92.45
Smith's engine expired on the launch, with flames from the front of the engine at the green. Vandergriff made a nice pass for the win light, right down the groove with only light tire haze on the top end. We'll be down for a bit while the Safety Safari removes the deposit Smith left on the racing surface.
 (W) Gary Scelzi (Team Winston Dragster) 0.510 4.702 306.40
 (L) Rhonda Hartman-Smith (Fram Dragster) 0.515 11.153 88.27
Hartman-Smith's team loaded it up for this race with Scelzi and overpowered the launch pad, but it probably didn't matter because "Big Red" made an awesome pass, right down the groove. Scelzi will have lane choice against Bernstein in round two.
 (W) Cory McClenathan (MBNA Dragster) 0.500 7.487 149.61
 (L) Bobby Lagana (Amish on Nitro Dragster) 0.534 10.068 100.96
This one was a pedaling contest, both cars up in smoke and both drivers in and out of the throttle trying to get the tires hooked back up. Experience proved to be the difference, Lagana's car fishtailing so badly that he had to get out of the throttle for a couple seconds to settle it down while Cory Mac was pulling away. Even so, Lagana had a second chance when Cory Mac's car popped the blower and spit out the blower belt at 1,000 feet, but by then the MBNA dragster had too much momentum and coasted home well ahead of Lagana. Cory advances, but loses lane choice to tire-smoking Grubnic in round two.
 (W) Larry Dixon (Miller Lite Dragster) 0.514 4.638 312.64
 (L) Gary Clapshaw (Spirit of Las Vgas Dragster) 0.537 4.831 284.03
This one was all Dixon (and Dick LaHaie), the Miller Lite dragster carrying the front end a long way down the track and streaking down the groove to set low ET of the weekend, also matching top speed in the process. Clapshaw turned in a respectable performance, but Dixon's stellar run left him far behind. Dixon will have lane choice against Vandergriff next round.
 (W) Doug Kalitta (MGM Grand Dragster) 0.426 4.780 296.24
 (L) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.519 5.015 281.07
Romine's car refused to fire until after Kalitta had already made his burnout and was backing up, so Romine had to abbreviate his burnout. Kalitta nailed Romine to the tree. Both cars dropped a cylinder at the start, but Kalitta's recovered and Romine's didn't. Kalitta will have lane choice when he meets Amato in round two.

Results for Elimination Round 2
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel
at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) David Grubnic (Montana Express Dragster) 0.497 4.940 283.79
 (L) Cory McClenathan (MBNA Dragster) 0.361(R) 4.726 292.58
12:25 PM Cory Mac won the only prior matchup between these two this year. Now the score is even, Cory Mac pulling the trigger too soon and Grubnic getting his second freebie in a row.
 (W) Doug Kalitta (MGM Grand Dragster) 0.486 4.756 300.13
 (L) Joe Amato (Dynomax/Valvoline Dragster) 0.314(R) 11.973 78.28
First time these two have faced off this year. Amato posts his first red light of the year, by a big margin, and Kalitta advances with lane choice against Grubnic in the semifinals.
 (W) Gary Scelzi (Team Winston Dragster) 0.489 4.688 307.44
 (L) Kenny Bernstein (Budweiser King Dragster) 0.491 4.847 282.24
These two golfing partners have met four times already this year, Scelzi winning three of the four. Bernstein had problems getting the engine fired, but made a short burnout and was able to get back without delaying Scelzi. The race was even to half track, then, then Scelzi pulled away to win by a Margin of victory = 0.161 seconds (approximately 67 feet). Bernstein was smoking the tires from half track on and as he went through the lights the right rear tire let go, the tread separating. He stopped without incident, the right rear tire in shreds.
 (W) Larry Dixon (Miller Lite Dragster) 0.492 4.706 306.26
 (L) Bob Vandergriff (Radiac Abrasives Dragster) 0.485 4.743 281.36
These two had two prior meetings this year, each winning once. This was a good drag race, two good, clean runs, Dixon taking the lead past 1,000 feet and winning by a margin of victory = 0.030 seconds (approximately 12 feet) when Vandergriff lost the blower belt on the top end of the run. Dixon faces Scelzi next round, Scelzi with lane choice by 0.018 seconds.

Sunday

Results for Elimination Round 3
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Top Fuel
at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Doug Kalitta (MGM Grand Dragster) 0.489 4.677 302.35
 (L) David Grubnic (Montana Express Dragster) 0.524 5.442 219.12
2:15 PM On paper Kalitta was a prohibitive favorite and Grubnic's luck finally ran out, Kalitta making an almost-flawless pass while Grubnic lost traction at half track and then lost the engine.
 (W) Gary Scelzi (Team Winston Dragster) 0.466 4.677 305.22
 (L) Larry Dixon (Miller Lite Dragster) 0.516 5.164 240.72
Great matchup, two of the quickest cars in the world. Scelzi was away first and then lengthened his lead when Dixon's Miller Lite dragster started spinning the tires, first about 100 feet out and then again around half track. Scelzi matches Kalitta's ET to the thousandth and gets lane choice in the finals by virtue of a better speed.

Sunday

Results for Final Round
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in
Top Fuel at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented
by NAPA:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Gary Scelzi (Team Winston Dragster) 0.480 4.711 303.98
 (L) Doug Kalitta (MGM Grand Dragster) 0.538 4.789 291.19
4:05 PM This is it, the final pair of cars to complete the event. They were so close together in performance in the semifinals that lane choice here was decided by speed (Scelzi). Scelzi tattooed Kalitta at the tree and was never headed, extending his lead in the middle of the run when Kalitta started hazing the tires. That wraps things up from Seattle, Sonoma is next.
