6:37 PM We open the evening qualifying session with a pair of the top performers in the category. Our video feed is finally working and we had a good look at two good runs, Troy outrunning "the Professor" in both ET and speed.

These two ran identical ETs last session, Morgan a little faster. This time Morgan is a few thousandths quicker, replacing Pawuk on the bubble, and Marnell just misses once again.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.920/197.94, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.951/197.86, Was #5

Jeg posted a 1.018 60-foot time, very quick, and followed it up nicely to take over the #1 spot. Pawuk was a little slower, a 1.038, but stepped back into the field nicely, bumping Morgan. Now Tony Gillig is on the bubble at 6.986.
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.946/198.47, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.972/198.44, Was #11

Two more nice runs, the Reher-Morrison red-white-and-blue car running well as well as looking good.
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.927/197.22, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.947/197.13, Was #6

Stevens suffered a DNQ at Denver, but this run should keep him well in the field here, a stout 1.015 60-foot time and a nice run. Hammonds spun the tires on the launch.
Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 10.638/82.02, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.034/196.76, Was #19

Best prior run: 8.083/124.59, Was #24
Martino shook hard on his first attempt today. Here he made a solid pass, smooth and straight. Blakeney sat at the tree for a while and then made a slow pass. We'll be down for a couple minutes while they install sunshades on the tree, the setting sun right in the drivers' eyes.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.959/196.99, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.963/197.22, Was #12

Best prior run: 7.164/193.05, Was #25

Bob Frey is having fun predicting #1 runs - and he's right on the money again for Krisher off a 1.025-second short time.
Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 7.013/195.51, Now #23
Best prior run: 11.596/75.85, Was #26

Best prior run: 7.042/191.10, Was #23
Robert Patrick held the bump spot these two were aiming for - a 6.979. Geyer comes up 0.002 seconds short.
Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.963/197.16, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.986/196.64, Was #20
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.959/197.36, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.979/196.47, Was #16
Gillig replaces Patrick on the bubble, and Patrick moves up the ladder. The loser? V. Gaines, who was bumped.
Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.929/198.93, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.954/198.23, Was #10
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.941/198.20, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.973/196.76, Was #17
And Gaines repays the favor, bumping Gillig. That leaves Darrell Alderman on the bubble for tomorrow, the bubble time a 6.961. The sixteen-car field spans just 0.049 seconds with two qualifying sessions left.

Nice pass by Jeg, staying third on the ladder but improving in a round where most lost ground. Morgan also stepped up, but was still out of the field. That's it, the final qualifying session will open with Smith on the bubble at 6.959 seconds and Krisher "Krushing" the field with a 6.907, the field still very tight with a 0.052 second gap between first and sixteenth.

5:46 PM The track is hot and slick, so don't look for any new records or many changes. The bump is Rickie Smith's 6.959.
Left Lane: J.R. Carr Runs 7.260/191.92, Now #26

Yates runs right with Krisher this session - and that makes Yates' chances for tomorrow look pretty good. But Krisher got out of the groove a bit, to the left, so his run isn't as good a barometer as usual.
Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.932/198.26, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.921/199.32, Was #4

Best prior run: 6.935/198.26, Was #9

Best prior run: 6.941/198.20, Was #10
No help here, Marnell getting what Linda Vaughn called "a little crooked" in the middle of the run.
Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 7.003/197.25, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.917/198.76, Was #3
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.975/197.94, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.931/198.52, Was #8
Troy wins the intra-family battle today - but today doesn't count.
Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.019/196.33, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.946/198.47, Was #12
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 6.996/196.79, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.973/197.74, Was #20
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.955/197.08, Now #5

Best prior run: 6.973/198.64, Was #19
Stevens makes one of the best runs of the session. Morgan launched and shut it down very quickly, probably shaking.
Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.053/193.07, Now #25
Best prior run: 7.034/196.76, Was #25
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.954/197.33, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.947/197.80, Was #13
Pawuk makes a very consistent run, all four runs in the 6.90s and the last three at 6.947, 6.962, and 6.954 under very different conditions. The 6.954 is the second-quickest of this session so far.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.000/196.30, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.959/196.99, Was #16
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.001/196.47, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.956/197.42, Was #15
No help here.
Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.979/197.62, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.983/197.83, Was #22
Hammonds was the final driver with a chance to knock Rickie Smith out of the field. Hammonds makes his best run of the weekend, but comes up short of Smith's 6.959 and will be a spectator tomorrow. That's it, no changes in the field this session.

Results for Elimination Round 1
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock
at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Troy Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order '97 Cutlass)0.467 6.985 196.90
 (L) Darrell Alderman (Team Mopar '00 Avenger) 0.488 6.977 196.04
11:22 AM In the only prior matchup between these two Alderman took the win. Coughlin evens the score here with a great driving job, winning with a holeshot against the usually quick Alderman. Margin of victory = 0.013 seconds (approximately 4 feet).
 (W) Allen Johnson (Amoco '99 Avenger) 0.443 6.990 195.59
 (L) V. Gaines (Western Motorsports '00 Camaro) 0.519 7.026 195.99
AJ got a huge head start and never looked back, the margin of victory = 0.112 seconds (approximately 32 feet).
 (W) Jim Yates (Splitfire Dynomax '00 Firebird) 0.498 6.948 197.39
 (L) Robert Patrick (Purvis Ford '00 Mustang) 0.505 7.013 195.90
Yates got a slight advantage off the starting line and then pulled away when Patrick's Mustang did a dance at half track. The wiggle was brief, but it doesn't take much with these cars,
 (W) Richie Stevens (Valspar Refinish '00 Firebir0.514 6.963 196.47
 (L) Bruce Allen (Reher-Morrison '00 Firebird) 0.440 8.189 123.75
Allen slapped a huge holeshot on the usually prompt Stevens, but then had handling problems and had to abandon the run.
 (W) Warren Johnson (GM Goodwrench Svc '00 Firebi0.505 6.948 198.15
 (L) Mark Pawuk (Summit Racing '00 Firebird) 0.469 11.727 70.28
These two split in their prior two meetings this year. Pawuk left first, but his car turned left and he had to get out of the throttle to save it. WJ went right down the groove to earn lane choice against Stevens next round.
 (W) Jeg Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order '97 Cutlass) 0.430 6.933 197.83
 (L) Tom Martino (Century 21 '00 Firebird) 0.473 8.999 105.41
Jeg got the holeshot and, like Pawuk, Martino heads for the centerline on the launch. Coughlin runs low ET of the round so far and will have lane choice against Yates in round two.
 (W) Kurt Johnson (AC Delco '00 Camaro) 0.450 6.936 198.82
 (L) Scott Geoffrion (Team Mopar '99 Avenger) 0.494 6.988 196.10

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

2:32 PM The two holeshot artists face off to see who gets to go to the final round, Troy with six and Richie with three so far this year. Stevens won the battle at the starting line and then Coughlin's Oldsmobile began to shake, the chutes coming out at half track. Stevens wins with his slowest ET of the day.

Results for Final Round
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in
Pro Stock at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals
Presented by NAPA:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Richie Stevens (Valspar Refinish '00 Firebir0.482 7.018 195.70
 (L) Jeg Coughlin (Jeg's Mail Order '97 Cutlass) 0.455 7.498 146.00
3:55 PM The first of the Professional final rounds sees Stevens put Coughlin in the less-favored lane and then Coughlin won the battle of the starting line. But the track is 1,320 feet long and Coughlin got out of shape in the middle of the run, allowing Stevens to parlay three consecutive 7.01-second elapsed times into his third national event win, his last win coming at Englishtown in 1999. He had to get around two Coughlin brothers in the final two rounds to do it, so it was no cakewalk. Congratulations to the Valspar team for the victory.
