Results for Qualifying Round 1
|
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the
13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Peter Russo Runs 5.744/201.28, Now #1
3:00 PM Russo is an Aussie making his first appearance here in national
event competition. He was in and out of the throttle a couple times on the top
end of the run.
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 5.742/170.30, Now #1
Right Lane: Bob Hallock Runs 14.133/76.84, Now #3
According to our spotter, Hallock was up in smoke immediately and TJ pulled
the plug at half track.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.320/204.82, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 21.892/46.15, Now #5
Cruz had a nice run going, clocked at 236 mph at half track, but then the
header flames went out. Haddock was up in smoke immediately.
Left Lane: Cory Lee Runs 5.165/252.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 10.662/74.61, Now #5
Cory Lee made a huge burnout, almost 1,000 feet. Then he made a 1,000-foot
pass, the engine off as he crossed the finish line. Creasy lost traction
immediately.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.351/253.47, Now #4
Right Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.051/289.20, Now #1
Pedregon was on a very good run, then started hazing the tires around 900
feet down the track.
Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 7.890/96.71, Now #8
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.361/258.52, Now #5
Sarver lost traction about 100 feet out, pedaled, and gave up. Gilbertson
started smoking the tires at half track and stayed on the throttle.
Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.054/243.94, Now #2
Right Lane: Del Worsham No Time, Now #13
Hofmann was on a stout run, then popped the blower at 1,000 feet with a big
BANG. Worsham had his problems right at the starting line, the engine letting go
and a fire burning under the car. He pulled to the side at about 300 feet and
made a hasty exit from the car, a trail of oil from the starting line to where the
car stopped.
Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 8.542/93.64, Now #10
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 8.919/94.69, Now #11
Skuza made his usual half-track burnout. Both cars were up in smoke early,
both drivers electing to return and try again rather than take a chance on
pedaling to try to save this run.
Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.197/246.30, Now #4
Right Lane: Jim Epler Runs 7.242/118.15, Now #10
Cannon made a very quick run for the first 60 feet, then legged it out to
the finish line. Epler's engine went silent with no visible reason around half
track, but the Safety Safari went to work cleaning up scattered debris, including
a timing reflector.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.086/286.92, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 8.263/97.69, Now #13
Nice-looking run for Capps, the elapsed time surprisingly slow. Pedregon's
car was all over the lane and he clicked it off.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 5.082/289.69, Now #4
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 4.963/303.09, Now #1
Nice side-by-side for the crowd to half track, then Toliver went into
overdrive and motored away from Force.

Results for Qualifying Round 2
|
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the
13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following
run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Louis Sweet Runs 5.015/260.26, Now #2
No Prior Run
7:02 PM We open with a West-coast racer rarely seen on the national event
tour, more often seen in a fuel altered. He runs a career-best elapsed time and
speed here with a Dodge Avenger body on the altered chassis, but pops something in
the lights and has a fire in the engine compartment as he slows. The car got very
close to the wall, but he kept his cool and steered it safely away from the
concrete. The onboard extinguisher did a good job of knocking the fire down and
on the video we could see the "Coldfire" agent dripping from the underside of the
body as Sweet exited through the roof hatch.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 4.994/285.77, Now #3
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.875/306.81, Now #1
Best prior run: 8.542/93.64, Was #16
Worsham made a good run, but looked like he was struggling beside Bazemore,
Bazemore blowing away the track record by 0.066 seconds and leaving the CSK
Pontiac in his wake.
Left Lane: Jim Epler Runs 5.119/285.29, Now #10
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 4.981/298.93, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.890/96.71, Was #16
Sarver made a clean pass, the car getting very close to the centerline in
the middle of the run. Epler started out strong, but smoked the tires from half
track on, over near the wall and out of the groove.
Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 6.198/156.66, Now #18
Best prior run: 21.892/46.15, Was #22
Right Lane: Peter Russo Runs 5.457/265.27, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.744/201.28, Was #17
Haddock's Pontiac bounced over very near the wall and he had to lift. Russo
went right down the middle of the lane, a clean pass for the Aussie.
Left Lane: Bob Hallock No Time, Now #22
Best prior run: 14.133/76.84, Was #22
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 5.506/220.80, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.742/170.30, Was #17
Hillock's car broke on the burnout and didn't have enough momentum to coast
off the top end of the track, so TJ had to shut his engine off after backing up
from his own burnout. Al Hofmann often jokes that this car "is Helen's (his
wife's) deal," but here he is on the starting line helping get the car ready to
run. The car dropped a cylinder on the left side and tried to cross the
centerline - a couple times. Johnson pedaled and did what he could, but the run
was doomed from the start.
Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 8.423/100.21, Now #20
Best prior run: 10.662/74.61, Was #21
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 8.000/154.33, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.351/253.47, Was #14
Creasy had to beat Russo's 5.457 to get in the field. Densham was in, but
not very far. Both cars spun the tires early in the run, Densham
uncharacteristically getting back in the throttle late in the run to scoot ahead
and beat Creasy to the finish line.
Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.051/293.09, Now #6
Best prior run: 8.919/94.69, Was #21
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 10.078/80.28, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.320/204.82, Was #13
Skuza did another 1,000-foot burnout, Cruz a much more conservative
tire-smoker. Skuza kept the tires stuck to the track for the entire pass this
time around, bumping Russo and pushing Pedregon down the ladder a rung after Cruz
post traction almost immediately. Now the bump is Bob Gilbertson's 5.361.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.274/264.13, Now #14
Best prior run: 8.263/97.69, Was #20
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 6.091/149.93, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.197/246.30, Was #13
Both cars were in trouble fairly early in the run, Cannon abandoning the run
while Pedregon stayed with it, trailing tire smoke most of the way. The decision
got Tony in, for now anyway.
Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.339/222.22, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.361/258.52, Was #17
Right Lane: Cory Lee Runs 6.747/129.99, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.165/252.47, Was #12
Lee continues to challenge Skuza for the longest, smokiest burnout honors,
laying down another match race-quality effort here. He left hard, then got out of
the groove and out of shape, the car car headed for the centerline, then very
sideways as he yanked it back, the left rear tire crossing the centerline.
Meanwhile, Gilbertson once again shut the engine off very early, coasting across
the line. He's in, but barely.
Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.055/289.82, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.051/289.20, Was #7
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 11.298/75.69, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.086/286.92, Was #10
Capps got the front end up and was chattering the tires, so he shut it down.
Pedregon repeats his earlier effort, another 5.05, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.030/281.42, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.963/303.09, Was #2
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.952/289.69, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.082/289.69, Was #9
The crowd loved this matchup, Toliver leading Force in the points. This
time Force got the win light, Toliver losing traction in the middle of the
run.

Results for Qualifying Round 3
|
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the
13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following
run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.051/287.90, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.054/243.94, Was #9
12:40 PM Hofmann missed the evening session yesterday after banging the
blower in the first session. Good run here, no signs of any damage.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.210/226.35, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.086/286.92, Was #10
Right Lane: Don Sosenko Runs 6.439/157.52, Now #21
No Prior Run
Sosenko pulled the plug before mid track. Capps looked like he was on a
good run, but then the engine started popping and banging on the top end and the
car nosed over.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.175/265.64, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.320/204.82, Was #15
Right Lane: Bob Hallock No Time, Now #22
Best prior run: 14.133/76.84, Was #23
Cruz steps up a bit with some engine damage on the top end, the car trailing
smoke through the traps. Hallock launched, got very sideways, crossed the
centerline, and called it off.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.264/270.86, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.351/253.47, Was #17
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 5.257/278.92, Now #15
Best prior run: 8.423/100.21, Was #23
These two get in on two pretty good runs, bumping Tony Pedregon and Bob
Gilbertson. Creasy appeared to hurt the engine a bit, the car trailing smoke
through the lights.
Left Lane: Cory Lee Runs 7.198/116.45, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.165/252.47, Was #12
Right Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 11.613/76.19, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.198/156.66, Was #21
Instant smoke for Haddock, tire spin and a banged blower at mid track for
Cory Lee, the car getting very sideways at half track.
Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.112/276.46, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.197/246.30, Was #14
Right Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 15.324/71.58, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.339/222.22, Was #18
Gilbertson lost traction immediately, the car getting very sideways before
he pulled the plug. Cannon's car was mixing the cylinders up on the top half of
the run, but had enough power to improve and move away from the bump spot.
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 5.219/233.60, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.506/220.80, Was #20
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.039/290.57, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.274/264.13, Was #17
These two were shooting at Gary Densham's 5.264. Both made it in, but TJ
was only quick enough to earn the bump spot. That bumped both Densham and
Creasy.
Left Lane: Peter Russo Runs 5.443/275.96, Now #20
Best prior run: 5.457/265.27, Was #20
Right Lane: Jim Epler Runs 9.173/94.11, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.119/285.29, Was #13
Russo makes another career-best run, but is still too slow to make the
field. Epler's car got the front wheels up and was spinning the rear tires, so he
shut it down early in the run.
Right Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.101/266.21, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.051/289.20, Was #9
Pedregon's car was bouncing most of the way down the relatively bumpy right
lane and popped the blower after the car was well into the shutdown area, the
pressure relief hatch in the hood sailing through the air. No fire and no major
damage, however.
Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 5.079/282.30, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.981/298.93, Was #4
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 6.374/136.90, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.051/293.09, Was #8
Three pairs remain to close this third session. Skuza did a burnout to the
half-track markers, the crowd loving it. Both cars found the edge of traction and
crossed over. Sarver just barely crossed that fine line, hazing the tires from
half track on, while Skuza spun the tires hard at half track, the car getting
sideways.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 5.090/274.89, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.952/289.69, Was #2
Right Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 6.478/134.67, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.963/303.09, Was #3
These two were 1-1 in the first two qualifying sessions, lane choice
appearing to be a factor in each case, the car in the right lane losing traction
on the top half of the run. But this time it was a blower belt that made the
difference, Force's "Hound Dog" with it's tongue out on the top end and Toliver
unable to take advantage of Force's power deficiency because his blower belt went
sailing around half track.
Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.021/286.56, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.875/306.81, Was #1
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.066/292.96, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.994/285.77, Was #5
Strong run for Bazemore, low ET of the round, both cars spinning the tires
on the top end of the now-warm dragstrip. There isn't a cloud in sight now, so
the track surface is under full sunshine and should be even trickier for the final
qualifying session. When that session starts, the "have-nots" will be shooting at
Tommy Johnson Jr.'s 5.219 to get into the field.

Results for Qualifying Round 4
|
KENT, Wash. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car
at the 13th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Northwest Nationals Presented by NAPA
listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Peter Russo Runs 5.639/268.01, Now #20
Best prior run: 5.443/275.96, Was #20
4:52 PM The bump as the final session opens is Tommy Johnson Jr.'s 5.219.
The track proved very slippery for the Top Fuel cars, so it's likely the floppers
will also have problems with tire smoke on the tope nd of their runs. Russo gave
it another game try, but will have to wait for Sonoma to try to make his first
field.
Left Lane: Bob Hallock No Time, Now #23
Best prior run: 14.133/76.84, Was #23
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.234/285.77, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.264/270.86, Was #18
Hallock's car had problems and shut off before making a burnout. Densham's
computer failed in the third session, so he had to make some guesses for this final
effort. He made a good-looking run, but came up short.
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 12.389/82.10, Now #16
Best prior run: 5.219/233.60, Was #16
TJ said the car should have run quicker last time out and expected a low teen
or a "5.0" this session. But the car shook on the launch and then idled
through.
Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 5.331/274.16, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.198/156.66, Was #21
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.305/242.71, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.175/265.64, Was #15
Haddock gave it all he could, finally getting a full pass on the books, but
he came up short. Cruz blazed the tires from half track through the lights.
Left Lane: Bob Gilbertson Runs 5.236/273.00, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.339/222.22, Was #20
Right Lane: Cory Lee Runs 5.304/229.12, Now #14
Best prior run: 5.165/252.47, Was #14
Gilbertson has been struggling this weekend, trying to get a five-disk clutch
setup to work. He stepped up a full tenth of a second this session, but still came
up short of the bump time. Lee shut it off early, the car out of the groove and
moving around.
Left Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 5.438/226.54, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.257/278.92, Was #19
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.623/164.51, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.112/276.46, Was #12
Creasy was the last car with a chance to knock Johnson off the bubble - and
his car fell off the pace. Cannon set a new record for towing a parachute, the
chute shaking loose at half track.
Left Lane: Jim Epler Runs 5.122/289.38, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.119/285.29, Was #13
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 10.007/84.99, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.086/286.92, Was #11
Capps continues to struggle, losing traction very early in the run. Epler
made a full pass - no improvement, but not much off his pace from last evening's
session.
Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.069/291.89, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.051/289.20, Was #9
Right Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.101/247.97, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.051/287.90, Was #10
Two good runs for this session, the track bringing everyone down a notch or
two.
Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.050/281.71, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.051/293.09, Was #8
Right Lane: Louis Sweet Runs 5.933/164.23, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.015/260.26, Was #6
Both cars got off to a good start, but Sweet started spinning the tires at
half track and shut it down while Skuza motored on through the top end with little
apparent difficulty.
Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.074/283.37, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.039/290.57, Was #7
Right Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 6.276/140.47, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.981/298.93, Was #4
Sarver got very sideways and called it off. Tony motored through with one of
the better runs this session.
Left Lane: Del Worsham No Time, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.994/285.77, Was #5
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.018/294.31, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.952/289.69, Was #2
Both these cars have run between 4.95 and 5.09 on their qualifying runs, so
they figured to put on a good show for the crowd. But Worsham stole the attention
when he had a big blower explosion about 100 feet off the starting line, the blast
blowing the body off the car. The chutes deployed and the on-board fire
extinguisher system activated, spraying "Coldfire" fluid all over the engine and
the track.place. Meanwhile Force stormed down the groove with the quickest lap of
the session.
Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 4.984/293.92, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.963/303.09, Was #3
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.015/286.19, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.875/306.81, Was #1
With the cleanup delay, Force was back at the starting line to watch this
pair make their runs. Two good runs for this session, with the quickest pair of
ETs for the session and relatively little tire smoke until way down the strip.
Bazemore looked like he was ahead slightly at half track, but then started hazing
the tires and Toliver went by to get the win light.
That's it for the fuel
cars, Pro Stock is up next.
