Results for Qualifying 2

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in
Top Fuel at the 12th annual AutoZone Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to
run:

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.591/316.75, Now #2
Best prior run: 9.750/83.91, Was #19
Right Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 4.795/296.37, Now #16
Best prior run: 9.711/69.89, Was #18
10:52 AM Time for the Kings of the sport. We start out with Schumacher and Dunn, both on the outside looking in. Schumacher will need to get in here to have a chance of maintain his lead in the points....and he does it easily. It looks as though the problems that plagued the Funny cars early on may not affect these longer cars. Dunn gets in but is on the bump.
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 5.488/165.72, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.254/184.35, Was #19
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.648/314.39, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.020/229.39, Was #17
Dunn is in danger here, neither of these cars are in yet and both are capable of bumping him out. Bernstein gets a little out of the groove but straightens it out. Romine gets out of shape, kisses the wall about half track and has to abort the run. That pretty well ends Dunn's chance at the title.
Left Lane: Luigi Novelli Runs 16.994/67.27, Now #18
Best prior run: 5.031/223.88, Was #18
Right Lane: Joe Amato Runs 9.202/90.94, Now #16
Best prior run: 4.756/303.57, Was #16
Amato just has to survive this run with Novelli to stay in the show. Both cars go up in smoke right off the line. Amato pedals, breaks the tires loose a second time and finally gives up. Amato is safely in, Novelli being the last driver ver that could bump him from the program.
Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.676/311.85, Now #7
Best prior run: 4.752/308.92, Was #15
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 12.668/70.33, Now #13
Best prior run: 4.716/299.60, Was #12
Dixon stays in the groove and makes a good enough run to get him in the top half of the field. Head comes off the line, breaks the tires loose and pedals, then backs off the throttle.
Left Lane: Terry Mullins Runs 4.655/287.23, Now #7
Best prior run: 4.750/268.44, Was #15
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 10.680/66.87, Now #11
Best prior run: 4.698/303.37, Was #10
Mullins gets a little out of shape around halftrack but hangs on for a very good run for him. Cory suffers the same fate as many others before him as he goes up in smoke about 100' feet out.
Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.728/303.23, Now #13
Best prior run: 4.715/308.57, Was #13
Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.834/250.74, Now #10
Best prior run: 4.688/299.60, Was #10
Vandergriff pulls the wheels and carries them about 100 feet out. About half track, the engine goes up in a ball of flames. Herbert's run was right down the middle but he doesn't improve over his first run. Vandergriff's car left some oil on the track and we're down for a few minutes for a cleanup.
Left Lane: Eddie Hill Runs 4.616/311.27, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.710/309.63, Was #12
Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.602/31.13, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.592/313.73, Was #3
Hill has been qualifying well the past few races....and he continues that here as he jumps into the #5 position. Kalitta makes a picture perfect pass.
Left Lane: Randy Parks Runs 4.666/311.34, Now #9
Best prior run: 4.683/305.15, Was #10
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 10.977/77.17, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.570/306.67, Was #1
Parks makes a good pass and moves up one position. Grubnic rattled the tires pretty hard right off the line and shut down.
Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.674/307.16, Now #6
Best prior run: 4.618/311.85, Was #6
Scelzi makes a pretty decent run and should get a pretty good baseline to tune from later on this afternoon during eliminations.
Left Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 10.481/74.44, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.594/316.67, Was #4
Kalitta is the last car in this final round of qualifying for the top Fuelers. He comes off the line, breaks the tires loose and with nothing to gain aborts the run. The field is set with Grubnic on the pole and Amato in the 16th spot with a 4.756.

Results for Elimination 1
MILLINGTON, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations
in Top Fuel Dragster at the 12th annual AutoZone Nationals presented by
Pennzoil:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Terry Mullins (McKinney-TFX) 0.478 4.693 296.63
 (L) Randy Parks (McKinney-KB) 0.492 9.445 84.94
1:18 PM Finally we get down to business, under partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures. This is the first meeting between these two this year. Parks made two consistent runs during qualifying, Mullins stepped up on his second pass. Parks carried the front wheels about 100 feet, unloading the rear tires and going up in smoke, giving Mullins a free ride to round two.

 (W) Kenny Bernstein (McKinney-TFX) 0.490 4.573 306.53
 (L) Larry Dixon (McKinney-KB) 0.527 4.700 295.72
This is the sixth time these two have raced each other this year. Dixon had the early edge, winning the first three, with Bernstein rebounding to win the last two. Make it even - Bernstein with a visible edge at the green light and then running away to hide while Dixon struggled to get down the track. Bernstein pushed out some gaskets in the lights, flashes of flame from the top of the engine, but his crew chief said, "We've got plenty more (engines) in the truck."

 (W) Eddie Hill (McKinney-TFX) 0.493 4.614 311.13
 (L) Cory McClenathan (McKinney-TFX) 0.466 4.756 263.87
This was a very close drag race, Cory Mac away first and Hill making up the deficit to run side-by-side to the 1,000-foot marker. But then Cory Mac's engine went away and Hill really picked up the pace to win by a margin of victory = 0.115 seconds (approximately 45 feet). Their head-to-head record this year is now 3-1 in favor of McClenathan.
 (W) Jim Head (Davis-Rodeck) 0.463 4.747 302.48
 (L) Scott Kalitta (McKinney-TFX) 0.510 11.740 78.41
Kalitta lost traction almost immediately and Head evened their season record at 1-1 with an easy win, his car clean and straight to the finish line.

 (W) Doug Herbert (McKinney-KB) 0.469 4.727 304.60
 (L) Doug Kalitta (McKinney-TFX) 0.489 10.973 82.61
These two met twice before in 1999, Herbert winning both times. Kalitta had the clear performance edge in qualifying, but Herbert came in riding a hot streak and "I'd rather be lucky..." Doug, like Scott, lit up the tires in the first 100 feet and Herbert advanced easily, unchallenged. However, he lost lane choice to Hill in round two.
 (W) Tony Schumacher (McKinney-Rodec) 0.497 4.651 312.93
 (L) Mike Smith (Hadman-KB) 0.526 12.623 72.19
On paper this first meeting between these two this year was a huge mismatch. Smith's team loaded it up too much and blew the tires away in the first few feet, Schumacher screaming away for an easy win, but losing lane choice to Bernstein in round two.
 (W) Joe Amato (McKinney-BAE) 0.483 5.668 265.22
 (L) David Grubnic (Hadman-TFX) 0.539 5.926 271.57
Seems strange to see Amato as the underdog in this matchup, but he was lucky to run quick enough out of the trailer to hang on to the bump spot this morning. Grubnic also made his best pass "out of the box," then also smoked the tires this morning. Both smoked the tires here, Grubnic earlier in the run than Amato and then both drivers pedaling it to get to the finish line. Grubnic appeared to give it up when he lost traction, then got back in it only after seeing Amato also lose traction further down the track. The margin of victory = 0.314 seconds (more than 100 feet), Amato losing la e choice to Mullins in round two.
 (W) Bob Vandergriff (McKinney-BAE) 0.507 4.681 302.28
 (L) Gary Scelzi (Hadman-TFX) 0.684 4.639 306.67
These two have also met five times this year, Scelzi with the edge, 3-2. Vandergriff has been eating engines this weekend, but here he made Scelzi eat the tree, Vandergriff with a huge holeshot and a clean run to win by a margin of victory = 0.135 seconds (approximately 61 feet). That g ves Vandergriff lane choice against Head in round two.

Results for Elimination 2
MILLINGTON, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations
in Top Fuel Dragster at the 12th annual AutoZone Nationals presented by
Pennzoil:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Terry Mullins (McKinney-TFX) 0.494 4.708 295.72
 (L) Joe Amato (McKinney-BAE) 0.519 4.751 298.01
3:57 PM The track temperature is up considerably from round one, the skies now partly cloudy and the track in sunshine for much of the afternoon.

Mullins plays the spoiler here, taking out the number two man in the points (and helping Mike Dunn stay in contention as a result). Scelzi, number 3, is already out, as are Dunn and Doug Kalitta, so Tony Schumacher has a chance to really stretch his lead now.
 (W) Jim Head (Davis-Rodeck) 0.481 4.708 297.61
 (L) Bob Vandergriff (McKinney-BAE) 0.504 12.428 68.58
Vandergriff went up in smoke after less than 100 feet while Head left hard, with the wheels up, and marched right down the groove. He matches Mullins' winning ET to the thousandth, a statistical oddity.
 (W) Kenny Bernstein (McKinney-TFX) 0.489 4.653 300.73
 (L) Tony Schumacher (McKinney-Rodec) 0.501 6.102 149.93
Schumacher had a chance to open up a lead over his closest contenders in the points, but he lost that when his tires started smoking about 100 feet off the starting line. That put Bernstein back into the points chase - but only for an instant. Bernstein's car made a strong, clean run and then the right rear tire blew in the lights, taking the wing off the car and unloading the rear end. The car turned sideways and backed into the wall, then rolled over and began sliding backward, flames coming from the engine. It was a scary sight, but the chassis stayed relatively intact and the protective measures did their job - he walked away from it. The car is damaged too badly to repair, but the win moves Bernstein into fourth place in the points, 98 points out of first place.

All of the drivers in the top ten are done for the weekend except for Doug Herbert - who could move into third place in the points if he gets to the finals. Jim Head would have faced Bernstein in the semifinals, so he will have a competition bye into the finals
 (W) Doug Herbert (McKinney-KB) 0.491 4.750 300.86
 (L) Eddie Hill (McKinney-TFX) 0.536 6.504 127.33
Will Herbert's hot streak continue? Yes! Hill lost traction about 100 feet out, pedaled, lost traction again, and Herbert trucked right down the groove for a big round win. He will meet Mullins in the semifinals, Mullins with lane choice.

Unofficially, that round win moves Herbert ahead of Doug Kalitta and Mike Dunn in the points, into fifth.

Results for Elimination 3
MILLINGTON, Tenn. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations
in Top Fuel Dragster at the 12th annual AutoZone Nationals presented by
Pennzoil:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Doug Herbert (McKinney-KB) 0.446 4.676 305.15
 (L) Terry Mullins (McKinney-TFX) 0.490 4.742 303.09
6:33 PM Will it be the new guy or the hot guy against Head in the final round? It will be the hot guy, Herbert extending his round win streak to 10 in a row (three at Rockingham two weeks ago, four at Topeka a week ago, three more here) in a good drag race. Mullins' car moved around a bit too much to record a good run, though it wasn't all that bad - but Herbert left first and extended his lead all the way down the track, with a margin of victory = 0.110 seconds (approximately 49 feet). The win wasn't withou cost, however, he hurt the engine on the top end, leaving a trail of oil in the shutdown area.
 (W) Jim Head (Davis-Rodeck) 5.421 4.753 294.24
 (L) Kenny Bernstein (McKinney-TFX) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Bernstein was a no-show, of course, after his frightening accident in round two, so Head was running for lane choice. He missed, the rear tires spinning and smoking on the top end of the run. Herbert will have lane choice in the finals, going for his second NHRA event win in a week, the first coming Monday at the rain-delayed Advance Auto Parts Nationals in Topeka, and his third event win in two weeks, having also won at the IHRA event at Rockingham just two weeks ago.

 (L) Jim Head (Davis-Rodeck) 0.466 6.242 279.85
8:33 PM This is usually the final race of an event, but with all the rain delays there are still a couple hundred Sportsman racers left in competition.

Herbert wins his second Top Fuel even in less than a week on a pedaling contest, Head losing traction first and then Herbert about 300 feet out. Herbert's momentum gave him the advantage and he won by over half a second. When you're hot, ...

The win is Herbert's fourth of the year, in six final round appearances, and unofficially moves him into fourth in the points.
