Team Kitty Hawk ready for a win
Columbus, pre-race: One thing is certain in the world of drag racing - there will always be changes. A couple of recent changes come from the Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster team. At last year's NHRA Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing local fans met the team's newest driver. At this year's event, June 11-13 at National Trail Raceway, the latest driver for the team will be a familiar face for the fans.
At the start of the 1998 racing season Doug Kalitta left behind a very successful midget and sprint car career to pursue a straight-track career. That change was put into motion when his cousin Scott Kalitta announced his retirement after 16 years in the sport and when Connie Kalitta, his uncle, announced he'd be taking a break from driving.
Doug, 34, of Ann Arbor, Mich., carried on the family tradition single-handedly for most of the season. He had won one race and was runner-up at another in his Kitty Hawk entry when Connie announced he'd be returning to the seat for the last eight events of the year. Now, less than a year since his return, Connie will again be stepping out of the cockpit. During his absence Scott will come out of retirement to drive the team's second Kitty Hawk entry.
A close group, the three not only share a passion for racing, but for aviation as well. All three are pilots licensed for a variety of aircraft. Connie and Scott both owned worldwide air cargo companies in the past while Doug serves as the Vice President of Customer Management for Kitty Hawk which is in its second season of sponsorship with the team. Based at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Kitty Hawk is the seventh largest cargo airline in the world.
While Doug is looking for his first win at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals, he went out in round one last year after qualifying eleventh, Connie and Scott both have some final round experience at this event. Connie was the runner-up in 1965 and 1992, and the winner in 1986. Scott won this event in 1994 and 1995 after qualifying number one both years.
Also a winner at this event was Ed "The Ace" McCulloch, Doug's crew chief. A 49-time NHRA finalist, McCulloch, 57, of Hemet, Calif., was the Funny Car winner here in 1972.
