On the cover
After going 0 for 7 in final rounds, Australian Dave Grubnic scored his long-awaited first win when he wheeled Connie Kalitta's Zantrex-3 dragster to victory at the O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX. With his victory, Grubnic became the first Top Fuel driver from outside North America to win an NHRA national event. (Teresa Long photo)

Dave Grubnic's first win was as shocking as his first seven final rounds had been disappointing. His final-round opponent, Larry Dixon, had qualified No. 3 with a 4.52 and a track-record event top speed of 331.61 mph. Meanwhile, Grubnic was winning ugly, relying on luck. (page 14)
