Helms, Roth, Raftery, Land score at Jegs NHRA Cajun SPORTSnats
4/7/2008
Under a beautiful bright blue sky, 422 NHRA Sportsman racers took to the No Problem Raceway Park strip in hopes of taking home highly sought-after Wally trophies. When the smoke from the tires had settled at the Jegs NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals, four Louisiana residents were tops in their respective classes. In Super Comp, Charles Roth of Baton Rouge, La., took the victory with an 8.875, 159.82. Trevor Land from West Monroe, La., accomplished the same feat in Super Street, piloting his '82 Mustang to a winning run of 10.958.
Newly appointed track manager and former three-time Lucas Oil national champion Kevin Helms from Belle Rose, La., continued his winning ways, taking the victory in Stock with a 10.297. Keith Raftery of Lake Charles, La., drove his '07 GTO to a 6.954, 199.67, which gave him the victory in Top Sportsman. Raftery also won the pre-race award for Best Engineered.
In other action, Caddo, Okla., resident Kevin Self defeated Scott Benham of La Grange, La., in the Comp final. Jeff Strickland of Red Bay, Ala., drove to an 11.041 to earn the Super Stock title. Strickland is not a stranger to the winner's circle at No Problem Raceway Park; he also visited it at the 2005 Jegs NHRA Cajun SPORTSnationals with a Stock win.
In Super Gas, the '63 Corvette of Craig Anderson took the top spot with a 9.886. Anderson was crowned King of the Bayou in yesterday's competition and continued his success right on through the final. Stan Leerkamp from Olympia, Wash., took the victory in Top Dragster category a 7.253, 182.16. In Sportsman Motorcycle, Houston resident Mike McCullah advanced from the No. 2 qualifying position to top the class.
Saturday's action included the Mopar Hemi Challenge, in which Charlie Westcott Jr. from Parma, Mich., piloted his '68 Barracuda to an 8.515, 154.95. That gave him the $5,000 check and set an NHRA record.
