Dune what comes naturallyMonday, November 24, 2008

The season has ended and it’s time for some quick R & R for the Stoffers. I am sitting at the sand dunes in Glamis, Calif., right now. We’ve been doing a lot of riding recently. We made a few trips to Sand Mountain and after the Finals in Pomona we jetted home for a day and half and then left for “very” Southern California. You would never know it was November here. We stopped in Lake Havasu as we headed here and almost changed our minds and went boating instead of riding. The temperature is in the low 80s and the evenings are a comfortable 60 degrees.  It’s a little warm for Gary, but I am lovin’ it. A few weeks ago we were at Sand Mountain and the weather was in the 50s and 60s.

Today we will take the backpack and go for a 10-mile ride, and after that I’m sure Gary will end up at Competition Hill, or at Oldsmobile Hill.  The sand here is some of the softest you will ever encounter. That may not mean much to some of you, but to a dune enthusiast, it’s a lot.

Yesterday we rode out to Oldsmobile Hill and then moved on to the next large wall of sand, Brawley Slide. The last stop before we headed back to camp, was China Wall.  Up close it really didn’t seem that big, but when you rode about a mile away, it looked huge, and seemed to go on forever, similar to the Wall of China. Taking the wash back we had some fun riding on the flats, however, it was pretty sandy when your single file … especially if you follow Gary who likes to be on the throttle and has sand paddles that shoot “roosters” of sand a good 30 feet. It was fun though. Like I posted in one of my previous blogs, I like that kind of riding.

We sat up this morning and watched a group for 10 or so RVs, trucks, 4 bys and toy trailers, all roll in as a group, from Texas. I thought we travelled a long way to come here. I think they beat us. Glamis attracts riders from all over for the soft sand, and the miles and miles of dunes you can ride on. It’s hard to capture, but I have attached a few pictures to give you some idea of what it’s like.

The plan is to leave here on Sunday and spend a day boating in Lake Havasu on Monday then drive home on Tuesday. That should just about take care of my vacationing this year.  We’re trying to plan some sand trips for next year but I’m not sure of my schedule as of yet. We have the NHRA schedule and some of GEICO’s appearances; however, GE’s travelling is still not planned yet for me. Hopefully we can get to some of the places that the fans have been writing to me about; if we don’t get there next year, maybe the year after.

With that happy note, I am signing off for now.
