I’ve been busy for this last month. With the economy and stock market the way it is, GE has been occupying most of my time. The last blog I wrote, we were in Virginia Beach for our Bikers for Tykes event. Interestingly enough, we were located right in the path for one of the hurricanes that swept through the U.S. in the last month. Fortunately, the good “mojo” that Virginia Beach has, the storm came and went in the evening without impact, and the Bike event progressed without a hitch.
Since then, we made our way to Concord, then Dallas and finally to Memphis for the races. We did make a stop between Dallas and Memphis, in Tunica, Miss., for some R&R. Well the team got some R&R and gambling in; I used the hotel room as my office for four days. I was able to go out to dinner a couple of times and catch some of the sites in the area. Living in Nevada, I am not much of a gambler anymore, so the interesting element of the casino, for me was the fact it was on water (a different concept for a Nevadan). We did all engage in a little gluttony when we dined at Paula Deen’s Buffet in the casino. If you are in the area and get a chance, I would recommend it.
Last weekend I made a trip to Las Vegas for another appearance. This particular event that GEICO Powersports supported was a first-time event for me, and I have to admit it was a little different. It was fun though. “Femoto” is an event that was held during Bike week last weekend. Motorcycle manufacturers and vendors provide an interactive training and track event weekend for a select group of licensed motorcycle enthusiast. Riders, both men and women, sign up for guided rides on the manufacturers bikes and for guided laps on the race-racks. This gives the enthusiasts the opportunity to test all the different “toys” in one location. So if you are planning on buying a new bike, this event allows you to test the specific bike, along with all the others, on both the streets and the track. There is some grading system that determines your level of skill, and I think they also offer riding lessons to help you advance. They also had sign ups for a “Double Up” rides on the racetrack with one of the professional instructors. The event started around 8:00 a.m., and ended at 4:00 p.m., on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
At the last minute, I called my friend Dee Dee and asked if she wanted to meet me in Las Vegas. We really don’t get to spend much time together other than racing, and I am busy with NHRA activities then, so we don’t get much time to hang out together.
We had a great time cruzin’ up and down the Las Vegas strip, and we even had the chance to see the Wayne Brady show. I haven’t told Dee Dee this, but I think we should plan a “just the girls” getaway weekend every year.
This weekend is my first weekend home in a few months, so I will be playing the domestic role as we continue with landscaping, shop, and race car upgrades.
I did have a chance to support the October Breast Cancer Awareness activities last night as GE and a group of other local sponsors hosted a “Bunco for Breast Cancer” fundraising event. There was a packed ballroom of Bunco enthusiasts yelling and screaming and just simply having fun. My role this year was to help work the event and make sure all the players had what they needed. I will see if I can get some pictures of the sea of pink.
All for now.
