I know it’s been a while, so I will try and catch you all up on everything that has been going on here lately. A few crazy things have happened since the last time I wrote in.
Let’s go back a few weeks ago, starting with Father’s Day. Last year I won my first race on Father’s Day in Englishtown, but this year was a little different. This was the first year we haven’t been racing on it in forever. Dad wanted to go to the lake and since we really don’t spend a lot of time together as a family, because we are all traveling all over the country, we decided to go to the lake. We love going to the lake, we just normally don’t have a lot of time to do so, especially during the summer. We all loaded up and spent the whole day there. We took the boat and the jet skis and made a day of it. Mom made an amazing dinner and after we all ate, we were basically worthless for the rest of the day.
That was about my only day off out of the last few weeks. So after that Sunday, we were back to work. Then came Englishtown. Last year I won there, but in 2003 I hit the wall due to a huge wind gust after the grandstands and ended up crushing my foot. So I have good and bad memories from there. This year I was hoping to have good ones, but it didn’t seem to work out that way.
Everything that could possibly go wrong at a race went wrong for us. We couldn’t get off the line on the first pass without shaking the bike to death. Then second pass a wire was loose on the fuel injection system. The third pass the bike wouldn’t come out of third gear. So after thrashing all day to get these problems fixed and change motors, we finally made a decent pass. Chris was actually pretty consistent, so we knew we could run a good number if we just ever got down the track.
Then my national record got broken by Angelle and that really sucked. So you can imagine how I was feeling by this point in the weekend.
First round came and I saw Chris lose in a very tight first-round race, so I knew I had to keep us going. Plus being the point’s leader always adds a little extra pressure. So up I went against Michael Phillips. I ended up cutting a good light and the bike ran well again, so I was pumped up for second round. I had to run Steve Johnson and I was ahead until the 1,000-foot mark and then I felt the bike do something funny, by then the race was over. We went back to the pits and found that the lash cap had broken, so needless to say my weekend was awful. Not only did we lose in the first and second round, but now we had a ton of work to do before Norwalk.
So Sunday night we left the track and drove straight to Virginia to work on the motors. We have spent the last few days there and now are ready to go racing again. We are headed to Norwalk as I type and I am pretty excited about it. We also finally got all the bikes back to the same weight, even though it sucks that the Buells got punished for two races and no one else did, I guess that’s life. We are still going to fight for the championship no matter what happens from here on out. But anyway, that’s a whole other matter.
NHRA has never raced at Norwalk, so it will be very interesting to say the least. The top-eight cutoff is getting close, so our goal right now is to have Chris and I in the top eight by Indy. Hopefully we can gain a lot of ground this weekend. It would be great to get out of here with a lot of points.
Come check us out if you’re in town!!!
