Reaching for our full potentialFriday, October 17, 2008
Posted by: Tom Hammonds, Hammonds Racing Chevy

We are coming off of the Richmond, VA event where the two weeks before were very hectic. First off, we picked up our brand new Jerry Bickel Chevrolet Cobalt. We were able to test in St. Louis before heading over to Budds Creek, Md. for the Pro Stock Shootout, where we had mixed results. Our Chevy Cobalt ran fast, but like anything new, we won’t realize its full potential until we get the bugs worked out. On the other hand, there is no doubt in my mind that it will be an extremely fast car for us. Until we find out exactly what the chassis likes and dislikes, we expect to be a little inconsistent in our performance.

We knew going into Richmond, even though we did not have as many runs on our Cobalt that we would have liked, we were still excited to be at the race track competing against the best Pro Stock teams in the world. We made four runs and got better with each run. Even though we did not qualify, I think we learned a lot regarding our new chassis. It is so refreshing to know that if we do make changes, it immediately shows up on the graph, which allows us to make the proper adjustments.

Overall, it was a good weekend for us. Actually, I had a chance to visit a good eating place in Richmond with my publicist, Tonita Perry. She told me about this place called Croaker’s, but the only croaker I know is a fish that makes a lot of noise, and in my opinion tastes horrible! Fortunately, the food was very good. We had a good time and the atmosphere was great. It was good to see some of the old original pictures of Croaker’s on the walls, and how they originally got their start.

Now, we are in the process of regrouping, going over all of our engines before we head over to Vegas and Pomona for the end of the season. Although it has been a trying year, I truly believe that we are headed in the right direction. Hopefully, we’ll have an announcement soon regarding sponsorship for 2009 and beyond.

Our engines are running great, and obviously we have not been in a situation where we have gotten the most out of them, but I definitely feel that is coming. I am looking forward to finishing the season strong, getting ready for next year, and having a chance to qualify for the chase. Thank you to everyone that has supported us throughout the year. I really enjoy all the fans that have come by our pit area just to say hello and give us a few words of encouragement. A special thank you to Chevrolet, Mac Tools, and Goodyear. We appreciate the support, and hopefully we will give you all something to cheer about soon.
