Hey everyone, BB back with a special weekend blog. Let's see, where to start...
Gilby and the Trick Tank Motocross team are in Western North Carolina this weekend where they're racing at a regional qualifier for the prestigious Loretta Lynn Motocross Championships held in August at her ranch in Tennessee. Hopefully Jake and Justin will have a good day racing and come home with a spot for "Loretta" as the racers call it. I'll let you know the results next week.
In other news I'm pleased to announce that our favorite band, The Belmont Playboys (
http://www.myspace.com/thebelmontplayboys), who we've talked about here before and who always play at our parties, will be performing at a special concert to benefit Sally Gilbertson's favorite charity, the Humane Society, on Saturday, June 6 at the Pour House in Indianland, S.C. What's this have to do with drag racing, you ask? Well, Gilby is going to be the guest bartender, that's right the Gilby Monster will be mixing drinks all night. Now I've seen him mix a drink before so it should be a wild night. If you're in the metro Charlotte area I hope you make it a point to be there. If you want more info or directions shoot me an email at:
blastoffbob@earthlink.net and I'll send you some stuff. Now here's the hook to get you there. I'll be performing with the Playboys that night and will be singing three songs, don't you dare miss it! By the way, admission is free, we'll be asking for donations and I hope all of you GilbyManiacs in the area show up for a good time for a good cause and the keep Sally alive in our hearts.
Gilby told me a funny story earlier this week. He was having some issues with his swimming pool and had to have it drained for repairs. It took a day to drain it and when he got home he went out back to see how it was going and was greeted by Jake and all his buddies skateboarding in the empty pool. Gilby told me he just shook his head and started laughing.
Bob's Road Service Dept: Just want to tell you a quick story. Late Thursday night I got a call from my favorite bartender who works at the Sports Bar right down the street from my house, I eat lunch there just about every day. She was crying her eyes out, it seems someone vandalized a lot of cars in her neighborhood and she ended up with two flat front tires on her car and needed a ride to work on Friday, could I help her? I told her not to worry, I've got your back. So like a Knight on a white horse I got up early Friday morning, loaded up my floor jack, went to her pad, jacked the car up, took the tires off, loaded them up in my truck, took her to the tire store, got some new rubber, put them back on and was done by 9 am, plenty of time for her to make it to work. What does this have to do with racing you ask again?
Well, one of the lunch time regulars is a guy by the name of Joey Knuckles. You might remember him as Davey Allison's crew chief but his most important contribution to NASCAR earlier in his career was taking the role of tire changer to a new level. Joey was the fastest out there in his day and he used to literally leap across the hood of the car moving to the other side during pit stops.
So the story spread around the bar about how I helped her out, and she told everyone how it didn't take long at all, and how much she appreciated my help, and Joey got wind of it. So Joey comes up and sits next to me at the bar and says "I used to change two tires in 14 seconds, what took you so long?"
I replied..."I don't do anything in 14 seconds" to the thunderous applause of the assembled masses. I reminded Joey that Gilby's Funny Car can travel 3/4 of a mile in less than 14 seconds at over 300 mph and that's real racing. Touché...
Type at you soon...
