Hey everyone, hope you had a better weekend than the Carolina Panthers did. Our home town team had a miserable game Saturday night as even though they were highly favored over the Arizona Cardinals, in the playoff game here in town they choked big time. Oh well there's always next year.
One guy who had a great weekend of racing was Gilby's son Jake who swept every class he entered at the AMA Arenacross event in Baltimore on Sunday. Jake not only won both the 85 cc and Super Mini main events but he also won both of his qualifiers for a four for four finish which put him in the points lead in both classes. Jake and Team Trick Tank will now head out to Dayton, Ohio where they'll compete this weekend at the Ervin J. Nutter Center at Wright State University. If you're in the area stop by and say hi.
By the way, a lot of you have written asking if Jake misses a lot of school going to these events and the answer is no. Jake is a straight A student, he's an accomplished musician (piano and drums) and he loves school. He and Gilby fly out Friday evenings and return Sunday nights after the events so he doesn't miss a day of school.
Now let's get to drag racing.
In recent blogs I posted some old Funny Car photos and have since received literally dozens of emails asking for more, more, more! So here you go, courtesy of Tom West, here's a couple I think you might enjoy.
First up is the Custom Body Dodge of Fred and Phil Castronova out of Utica, N.Y., from 1972. Phil won the NHRA World Championship in the early 70s (I can't remember the exact year) and this car was one of the hitters back then. This shot is from Lions as the Castronova brothers went on tour and spent the winter season in California.
Next up is Tommy Grove. Grove campaigned a SOHC Ford against a sea of Chevys and Hemis with great success but eventually made the switch to the 426 to remain competitive. This shot is from the East-West championships at Lions in 1969.
