That's a load of scrap...Friday, August 01, 2008

Happy Friday to you all, BB here with a special recycling blog for you.

After we published a blog a while ago about us recycling our old race car parts we received a bunch of emails asking about what TEMCO recycles and sells for scrap from the tank business.

Good question...

As you can see by these photos TEMCO has every-day on-site at least two dumpsters for recycling different grades of steel and another dumpster for aluminum.

Top photo shows sheets of steel after TEMCO stamps out the round blanks we use to make heads (end pieces) for all the tanks we produce.  We usually fill a dumpster every other day.  Southern Metals swings by, picks up a full dumpster and drops off another empty one.  They take it to their facility, weigh it and send us a check.  Price for this steel is around 29 cents a pound right now.

Middle photo shows a dumpster full of the stampings left over from the motor blast deflector TEMCO builds for the military.  It's a little higher grade steel and gets us a little more money.

Bottom photo is the aluminum dumpster.  This is the big money-maker as aluminum is now going for about $1.08 a pound and they haul away two or three dumpsters a week.

It's kinda funny, every time the race team comes up to Charlotte from Blacksburg the first stop they make is to go to the dumpsters to see if there's anything they can use; what's the old saying?  One man's trash is another man's treasure.  Matter of fact, I built a custom mount for my Sirius satellite radio from scrap from the aluminum dumpster.

Next week all the race car parts we showed you in the previous blog will be picked up for recycling and I'll let you know how that turns out.

That's it for now, I'm heading to the beach with my girlfriend for the weekend later today; hope it doesn't rain and I'll type at you guys Monday.
