Do any of you old folks out there remember a song from the ‘70s named, "See you in September?"
That song was running through my head over the weekend as I was preparing the press release that I sent out today announcing that Gilby and the Tradicion Azul Tequila nitro Funny Car team will be taking a few months off so that Gilby can concentrate on his Business (TEMCO) and the team can have the time to build a new big-tube car that is required in order to race the NHRA POWERade series starting next weekend.
Most of you fans have emailed and asked why we're parking the car for a few months when we have Tradicion Azul Tequila as a sponsor? Good question...
Tradicion Azul Tequila is a brand new product on the market, as of right now it's only available in four states in limited quantities. We did a trial deal with them and they're pleased as can be with the response. We're in the process of working out a new contract for 2009 that should provide the funding for us to run the full NHRA circuit when the Tequila will be (hopefully) available nationwide..
Here's another reason: We originally had planned on running at the two upcoming IHRA races in Canada but with the price of diesel, nitro and hotel rooms, not counting the cost of the parts, Gilby decided to put that money towards a new car that we're going to debut at our home town race in September right up the road at the zMax Dragway.
I don't know for sure right now but most probably we'll also be racing at Dallas the following weekend as Tradicion Azul Tequila has partnered with the Motorplex as the "Official Tequila of the Motorplex" one of the states where it's available. We're also looking at Memphis, Las Vegas2 and Pomona2. I'll keep you "Gilby Maniacs" up to speed right here.
Last but not least on behalf of all of us at Terminator Motorsports I've got to give out a big shout out to Doug Herbert. What can you say, he dedicated this season to Jon and James and after a lot of gut-wrenching rounds this year everything clicked together yesterday and the driver did his job on the line. I'll bet his daughter Jessie will be at every race from now on...
