More "Jungle" and a shameless plugTuesday, December 16, 2008

Hey everyone, happy Tuesday to you all.

Since my series of blogs about "Jungle Jim" has been appearing here, I've been inundated by literally hundreds of emails asking for more "Jungle" photos/stories and a lot of you asked for some "Jungle Pam" stuff so I dug through my archives and came up with these gems for you.

First up is "JJ" and Pam from 1972. As you can see, Pammy wore some pretty snappy outfits to the drags; no wonder she was so popular with the male fans, huh? Besides dressing like she did, she also won the hearts of everybody who stopped by "Jungle's" pit by taking the time to talk to each and every one of them and she never, ever, refused anyone who asked to have their photo taken with her. She's a real sweetheart.

Next is from the 1973 NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown. Besides being a fan favorite, Pam was also a big hit with all the other drivers and teams. They all stopped by "JJ's" pit to see what she was wearing and I believe that's Harry Schmidt, who drove the "Blue Max" at the time, with his back to the camera checking things out. Now let's shift gears with a photo from 1971 that was published in Englishtown's Raceway News, the track's weekly program. I was good friends with Danny Zack, who owned Briggs Chevrolet in South Amboy, N.J. His first venture into drag racing sponsorship was with Ray Allen's SS/EA 454 Chevelle that won the world championship in Super Stock eliminator in 1971. By the way, that car recently sold for over one million dollars at Barrett-Jackson.

I brokered a deal that year for Briggs to sponsor "Jungle" for the sum of $2,000, which was a whole lot of money back then, and Danny told me later that year it was the best two grand he ever spent. He got more exposure from that sponsorship than he ever imagined and he sold a whole bunch of high-performance cars from that marriage. He even had a guy from California buy a car from him! I picked the dude up at Newark Airport, took him to the dealership where he got his car, a 1972 Z/28, and he hopped in it and drove it back home. He told me that he wanted to have a car that had "Jungle's" sponsor on the tail light panel, a true fan, huh?

Danny knew how to promote and he supplied "Jungle" with a Camaro that "JJ'" had painted and lettered up just like his racecar that he used as a tow car at all the East Coast races. I drove that car a whole lot and even got a speeding ticket in it in my hometown at the time, Manasquan, N.J. I'll never forget the cop, who after he stopped me, came up to the window expecting to find "Jungle" behind the wheel and instead found a guy named "Berserko" at the throttle.

In our next blog I'm going to pass along some "Jungle" stories that fans have sent me, I'm positive you'll dig them. Stay tuned...

Insert shameless plug here. Gilby, our asstistant crew chief Kevin Fenstermaker and I have spent a lot of time the past few weeks down at the race shop in Blacksburg going through all the parts that we've accumulated over the past few years that we don't need anymore. So Gilby is having a massive nitro garage sale. I've posted the info on every website I can think of but the one thing I've learned from doing this blog over the years is that there's not a better medium to get the word out to drag racing fans than NHRA dot com.

So if you know anybody who runs nitro, send them this link to "Crazy Gilby's giant clearance sale", his prices are insane!  http://www.tricktank.com/nitroparts-c-10.html?zenid=qld583mvk4em6g8bc7td1ka9v2

Keep the cards and letters coming, type at you soon...
