Hey everyone, your old (and I use that term literally) pal Double-B here with you.
To kick this blog off today here's a little report about the charity all of us here at Terminator Motorsports support from Gilby's nephew Chris:
Hello NHRA fans! Berserko asked me to follow up on his blog from last week where he mentioned attending the third annual “Rockin’ for the Cure!” here in Charlotte.
The event was designed to raise awareness and money for research to develop a cure for cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective cystic fibrosis gene.
My involvement with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation materialized a few years ago after my wife, Carly participated in an annual CFF walk to support our friend’s daughter Maya, who was born with the disease. The following year she wanted to do more to help the fight for a cure and we decided to have a party at our neighborhood pool, book a favorite local band and auction off a few items. As soon as we mentioned the idea to friends the event was born and two months later the first annual “Rockin’ for the Cure” netted over $18,000 for the CFF.
This year’s event provided our group with a couple of obstacles that seemed pretty overwhelming in the planning stages. How do we increase our net earnings during a rough economy? Our answer was to continue to do what we do: provide a great time for a great cause, and we enlisted help from The Paul Thorn Band who were fresh off an appearance on the Conan O’Brien Show and Jimmy Kimmel Show. If you haven’t been to a Paul Thorn concert you are definitely missing a great time. In addition to being a talented singer/song writer, he was a professional boxer who has stepped in the ring with Roberto Duran. With Paul’s help we generated some excitement for our event and secured sponsorship from local businesses.
Bob and his wife Sally have been significant contributors from the start and have helped our “Team Maya” group net over $120,000 from our “Rockin' for the Cure” efforts. As Berserko stated, the event was a huge success. As you can see from the pictures we had a packed house and our guests all had a great time. In addition to raising a lot of money we received some great media attention from local TV and radio. Planning is underway for next year and we are discussing ideas to make it bigger and better.
Thanks Chris. Now we get to our contest. In the photo check out the auctioneer who's on the left facing the crowd. He's a long-time friend of ours that has a drag racing connection. He's been both a Top Fuel owner and driver until a few years ago when decided to retire from the sport. First person to send us an email to the address above and name him will win a really swell prize package, good luck to all.
Last but not least I turn 62 years-old this Saturday. I've already applied for, and will start collecting, Social Security this month but don't worry, I'm not retiring just yet. I'm having too much fun doing this thing called drag racing and will celebrate Saturday doing what I like best, going to the drag strip so I'll be at Rockingham this weekend and hopefully Gilby will win one for me...
Hoping I can blow out 62 candles; type at you guys later...
