SOUTHERN OREGON DRAGWAY, NHRA Sears Craftsman E.T. Racing Series Finals (Div. 6) — The slogan on the Team Woodburn Dragstrip T-shirts said it all: "We're Back." Since winning their seventh Division 6 team championship in 1993, Team Woodburn had finished no better than third and a disappointing fifth in two of the last three years. But when the burnout smoke settled Sunday at the Division 6 Sears Craftsman E.T. Racing Series Finals at former Jackson County Sports Park, the racers from the dragstrip at the northern end of Oregon's I-5 had dominated for their eighth title. Woodburn finished 15 points ahead of second-place Portland Int'l Raceway in Sunday's all-run competition. Last year's champ, Seattle Int'l Raceway, was third. Woodburn also accumulated the most points in Saturday's competition among the year's Race of Champions drivers in the five brackets that determined the 1999 division champions.
Of a Division 6 record 522 cars and drivers, the 1999 division champions are Donald Sefton (Super Pro), Gary Feuerborn (Pro), Jody Lang (Sportsman), J. Glenn Miller (Motorcycle), and Clint Steele (High School).
Sunday's competition included Snowmobile, or Sled, and Jr. Dragster and was without High School. The day's winners were Gary Hostetler of Portland (Super Pro), John Cymbulu of Madras Raceway Park (Pro), Lang (Pro), Mike Fordice of Woodburn (Motorcycle), Chris Kasel of Firebird Raceway (Snowmobile), Michael Thompson of Seattle (Jr. Dragster 8.90 to 10.99 and overall), and Casey DePeel of Woodburn (Jr. Dragster 11.00 and slower).
Portland Int'l Raceway won the Team Spirit Award.
